i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ITIIAMER M. JONES, OF ELM MOT'I, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,295, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed August 9, 1889. Serial No. 320,237. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ITHAMER M. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elm Mott, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable ot-hers skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure is a plan view from above, partly in section, lof the two halves ot the coupling ready to be pushed together. Fig. 2 is a side view of the saine.
A is a coupling-head provided with a stein a for attaching it to the car, and B is a coupling-socket, also provided with a stem a for attaching it to the reverse end of anothercar. The coupling-head A is provided with a central projecting tongue C at its front end, having the shoulders c for the front edges b of the socket B to strike against.
I) are pockets formed in the coupling-head upon each side of the central tongue, and E are hooks having their rear ends e abutting against the bottoms of the said pockets. The pockets are wider than the ends c of the hooks, so that the hooks are free to move laterally, and F are pivot-pins, which retain t-he ends of the said hooks in the pockets. The front edges f of the pockets are beveled, and g are correspondingly beveled shoulders on the hooks, which permit the ends of the hooks to be forced inwardly toward the central tongue and prevent the hooks from being forced too far in the opposite direction.
II are springs secured by rivets 7L to th central tongue, and having their free ends bearing against the hooks and pressing them outwardly. Shoulders are formed upon the hooks E substantially in line with t-he shouldersc on the central tongue and for the same purpose.
I is a vertical spindle journaled in the central tongue, and j are iiexible cords or chains wound upon the spindle and secured to it at one end and having their opposite ends secured to the hooks E. The vertical spindle may be revolved to wind up the chains and draw the hooks inward by means of any convenient forni of handle applied to the top of it.
The coupling-socket is provided with a cavity J and 7c are holes in the sides, which leave the catches m in the front of the couplingsocket for the hooks of the coupling-head to engagewith. When the cars are pushed together, the beveled edges m on the front of the hooks strike against the catches m on the socket and the hooks are pressed inward, entering the cavity and springing outward through the holes k as soon as their hooked front ends have passed the catches. The springs II keep the two halves of the coupling coupled together, and the shoulders c and t' prevent the front ends ofthe tongue and the hooks from striking against the bottom of the cavity J. The coupling-head is uncoupled from the socket by revolving the spindle I and winding up the chains or cords, so as to draw together the hooks until they clear the catches on the'socket.
Vhat I claim is- 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the coupling-head provided with a central tongue having shoulders c, and the springactuated hooks pivoted to said head on each side of the tongue and provided with shoulders z', of the coupling-socket provided with a cavity having catches m at its sides for the said hooks to engage with, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the coupling -head provided with a central tongue and a socket on each side of the tongue, andthe forwardly-projecting spring-actuated hooks pivoted to the said head, with their rear ends abutting against the bottoms of the sockets and provided with beveled front edges fm', of the couplingsocket provided with catches m for the said hooks to engage with automatically, and the vertical spindle journaled in the central tongue and provided with iieXible connections wound upon it and secured to the hooks for drawing said hooks inwardly, substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with IOO the coupling-head provided with a central catches for the said hooks to engage with autongue, andl pockets on each side of the tongue tomatieally, substantially as set forth. 1o having forwardly and outwardly projecting In testimony whereof I affix my signature in beveled edges f, and the spring-actuated hooks presence of two witnesses.
provided with ends pivoted in said pockets I. M. JONES. andwith beveled shoulders g corresponding Vitn-esses: With said edges f, which limit their' Outward T. C. GABRIEL,
motion, of the coupling-socket provided with R. S. JONES.
