HEMMING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,914, dated November 12, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE LA GUAYRA MAYO, of Great Falls, in the county of Gascade and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Presser-Foot Hemmer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates toan improvement in hemmers, andis especially designed for hemming all articles that require a wider hem than the ordinary fell; and the object of the invention is to provide a device which will turn a hem from, for instance, a quarter of. an inch to about seven and a half or eight inches in width, and also to provide a means whereby a draw-string, ribbon or tape may be inserted in the hem; and the further object of the invention is to provide a hemmer which will have a double gage and be constructed in a simple, durable, and thoroughly practical manner.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hemmer, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing the attachment in position during the operation of turning a hem and inserting a ribbon or tape.
In carrying out the invention, A represents abody-bar provided with a vertically-apertured post A, integral with the upper face near one end and at one side, into which post the presser-bar of the machine is secured through the medium of a set-screw a, passing through said post to a contact with the needlebar. The said post A is provided upon one side with a recess a intersecting the bore or aperture adapted for the reception of the needle-bar, which recess a is purposed to accommodate the presser-foot.
The frame ofthe hemmer consists of two side bars B and B, the side bar B being the wider of the two and provided with a longi tudinal slot 12 and a scale of inches b, produced upon the upper face, preferably at the outer edge. The side bar B is made to rest in a suitable recess formed transversely in the upper face of the body-bar A at or near the end of said bar, as best illustrated in Fig. 1, the said side bar B being ad j ustably held in connection with the body-bar through the medium of a set-screw b passing through the slot b of the side bar into the body-bar; but if it is found desirable in practice the set-screw b may be substituted by a rivet, the rivet being so located as to permit the side bar B to readily yet not too freely slide upon the body-bar. The opposing side bar B is passed through a transverse slot produced in the body-bar at or near the end, to which the slotted side bar B is secured, and the two side bars B and B are pivotally connected at their outer ends by a cross-bar O, which cross-bar rests upon the upper surface of the said side bars, as illustrated in the drawings. A forward cross or guide bar D is formed integral with the slotted side bar B, extending at right angles therefrom a distance beyond the smaller side bar B. The said inner guide or cross bar D is bent downward upon itself at right angles to form a vertical flange (1, whereby the said guide-bar pal-takes of the contour of an angle-iron. A second and under guide-bar. E, which more properly may be designated a retainingbar, is formed integral with the narrow side bar B, extending at right angles thereto in direction of the slotted side bar B and beneath and in engagement with the horizontal member of the guide-bar D, as best illustrated in Fig. 1. The retaining-bar E is also continued beyond the outer edge of the side bar B to support the extension of the guidebar D. Between the post A and the side bar B the hemmer proper H is secured to the edge of the body-bar contiguous to the guidebar D, which hemmer maybe of any desired construction, but is formed of one or two pieces of metal, preferably the latter, bent so as to represent in cross-section the letter U, and having one under edge turned upward and inward to curl over the fabric as it passes through to receive the stitch.
In operation the body-bar is slid upon the side bar until the inner face of the said bodybar is made to register with the inch or fraction of the inch to which the hem is to be turned.
The material is then passed under the entire frame and body-bar, carried down in direction of the guide-bar, and passed over the retaining-bar and beneath the guide-bar and into the hemmer. A ribbon or tape may be inserted in the hem by placing the same beneath the gage. In lace it can be used as a border, and in heavy material as a drawstring. Space must be left to remove the gages, and in very wide hems the hemmer should be removed from the machine.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the body-bar A, provided with an apertured post adapted to receive the presser-bar, and a hem-former II, secured to the said body-bar, of an adjustable frame consisting of a slotted side bar B, having a scale produced thereon, adjustably secured to the body-bar, a transverse-angled guide-bar D, secured to the slotted side bar, an opposing narrower side bar B, sliding in the body-bar, a transverse retaining-bar scoured to the said narrow side bar, engaging the under face of the guide-bar, and a crossbar 0, pivotally securing one end of the said side bars, all combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hemmer attachment for sewing-machines, consist-i ing of the body-bar A, provided with an apertured post adapted to receive the presserbar of the sewing-machine, and a hem-former secured thereto, an adjustable frame consisting of slotted side bar 13, having a guide-bar D at one end, an opposing side bar B, provided with a retaining-bar engaging the guidebar, and a pivoted cross-bar C, all adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
