IMPROVED BEER- PITCHER'.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,447, dated February 2, 1864.

To all whom it 'may concern.-

Be it known that I, DE WITT S. RAWsoN, ot' Peru, in the county ot' La Salle, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful AirTight Pitcher; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to produce a pitcher or vessel for holding aie, beer, cider, and other liquids, which becomes air-tight by poitions of the liquid filling the Ventilating and delivery passages and flowing out so as to open said passages whrn the vessel is tipped in the usual way for pouring out ot' the spout.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct my pitcher in any of the known forms, with a permanent top, T, soldered or cemented air-tight, near the center of which is an opening, A, of a size sufficient to fill the pitcher conveniently, the size I prefer being about one inch in diameter. Fitting into this closely is the rim B, about one inch high. Outside of this is the outer rim S, of an elliptical form, about one-fourth of an inch higher than B. This is permanently fixed to the cover T, with B near one end. The space contained between S and B forms the chamber O M. The cover D is of the same size as S, andpcrmanently fastened to it, with an opening one and one-fourth inch in diameter coming directly over B. The cap E fits closely in the opening in D, and has a rim one inch deep that passes down into the chamber C M.

The spout or delivery-pipe may be made in several ways 3 but the one I prefer is to have it in two sections, connecting with the pitt her at some point near the top, and directly in front of the largest part of the ellipse C passing downward at an angle shown at H to a point below a level with H, thence upward at an angle shown at K to a point above a level with the top of the pitcher. The handle L is directly opposite the spout and in front ofthe small part ot the elipsem.

The manner of operating is to till the pitcher through B, at the same time filling the chamber G M, place the cap E in the opening in D, and tip the vessel that the spout may become iilled. 'When it is desired to draw any of the liquid off, raise it by the handle and pour out of the spout in thel usual way, which tipping of the pitcher will cause the liquid in M to flow to G, thus allowing the air to pass into the ventilator V, under the rim of E, and over B into the pitcher. When the desired quantity is poured out, the pitcher is again placed in an upright position, when the liquid will return to M, and the angle of the spout at K will be filled to a level with H.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The closing of the vessel at the mouth, substantially as herein described.

2. A ventilator closed by the liquid and opened by changing the position of the vessel so that the liquid may run out ot' the airpassage, substantially as herein described.

3. A spout so arranged as to retain When in its usual upright position a'sufticient quantity of liquid to prevent a passage of air or gas to or from the liquid contained inside.

4. The arrangements for closing the mouth ventilator and spout, substantially as herein described, when used for the purposes herein described.
