Description
I. `E.' WEBB,
(No Model.)

UNITED STATES PATENT ErrcEs ISAAC H; WEBB, OF OIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED VALVE AND SPRAYING APPARATUS FOR CLEANING OIL-WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,464, dated November 5, 1889.
Serial No. 301,688. (No model) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC II. IVEBB, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Valve and Spraying Apparatus for Cleaning Oil-VelIS, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of a valveV and spraying device for cleaning the parafiine from oft the rock and walls of oilwells, and which operates by spraying the fluid from the tubing onto the rock and walls of the well.
My invention consists of certain peculiar combinations and novel arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be fully described in the annexed specification and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
In the drawings, A denotes a tube-coupling, which is connected with the oil or steam pipes B and B', as shown. The tube-coupling has formed on one of its sides a valve chamber or housing A which communicates with the interior of the coupling by horizon- G denotes an outlet in the lower end of the valve-chamber, which is provided at its inner end with a suitable valve-seat c.
D denotes the valve, provided with a stem cl, around which is disposed a coiled spring d', which tends to normally hold said valve in contact with and close the opening C. The stem is extended through a stuffing-box E at the upper e'nd of the chamber A', and has secured at said extended end a jar e, which acts as a drill-jar, and serves to loosen the valve -stem in case the same should stick.
F denotes the operating wire rope, reaching from the j ar to the derrick-oor.
II denotes the sprayer, which is formed of a perforated pipe coiled about the lower tube B', its upper end being inserted into the outlet C, as shown.
From the foregoing description, taken in 5o connection with the drawings, the advantages of iny improvement will be readily understood.
It will be seen that the valve may be opened or closed at will by means of the rope F, and when opened allows the fluid to flow through the sprayer H on the rock and walls of the well, thereby cleansing them and keeping them free from paratfine. Y'Vith the same apparatus I am also able to steam 6o the rock by opening the valve and making steam-connections with the tubing aboveground, thereby making the tubing serve a double purpose-wiz., for both pumping and steaming-doing away with the expense of an eXtra line of one-inch pipe, which is generally used for steaming.,
The jars e may be made in tubular or other form, and they 'serve to loosen the valve-stem in case it should stick, and caus- 7o ing it to be started down by a blow, like that of a halnmer, in case the spring fails to act, and also starting it in the opening movement.
By connecting the interior of the tubecoupling and the valve-chamber by small 7 5 horizontal apertures a a, as shown, the same will act as strainers, as nothing can enter the valve-chamber too large to get out through the outlet of said chamber.
Having thus described my invention, 'what 8o I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat.- ent, is
l. An improvement in oil-well cleaners, consisting of a coupling A, adapted to be secured to the meeting ends of two sections of the well-tubing, provided with a main chamber aligning the well-tubing, a lateral valve-chamber provided with a dischargeoutlet at its lower end, apertures connecting the main chamber and valvechamber, a 9o valve operating to normally close the said discharge-outlet, a spraying device connected with the discharge-outlet, and means for operating the valve, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the well-tubing, of the tube-coupling A, 'having a valvechamber provided with a discharge-opening,
lateral openings being provided between the ber, adapted to norma-Uyelose said opening,A interior of the coupling and the chamber, a, and means for operating the valve, substansprayng device connected With the said Y tially as shown and described.
chamber, consisting of a perforated pipe'ds- ISAAC H. WEBB. 5 posed about the tube and connected at its itnessesz upper end with the discharge-opening in the MARTIN CAREY,
chamber, :L Valve disposed within said Cham- THOMAS L. BRADY.
