N. PETiRS, PhowLilhoghphan Washingtom D4 C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WESTPHAL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FLOWER-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 413,745, dated October 29, 1889. Application filed August 4, 1888. Renewed July 22, 1889- fierial No. 318,294. (No model.)
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower-Stands, of which the following is, a specification, to wit:
My invention relates to flower-stands; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, as will be morefully shown.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a single flower-stand with most of the boxes removed to expose the brackets. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a curved bracket. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details,
1 are the brackets, and 2 sleeves, which, as
shown in Fig. 1, hold the sections of the brackets together. The brackets may be of wire of suitable form and held together by these sleeves, or, as shown in Fig. 2, a perforated plate 3 may be used, through which plate the upper ends of the bracket-sections are passed, said ends being reduced in diameter, as shown at 4 in Fig. 3. The ends are upset to hold the sections in place.
5 are arms hinged to the bracket-sections both for ornament and to hold the brackets in position while placing the baskets 6 in position and while removing them. These arms are held together by thumb-screws or otherwise, as desired. The boxes 6, which are supported by the brackets, in their turn hold the brackets in position. The two parts are thus mutually dependent on each other. These boxes may be of any suitable construction.
A convenient construction of box is one whose sides and bottoms are formed from a strip of woven Wire-cloth bent into shape and secured to cast or stamped end pieces 7. These end pieces may be of any shape which it is desired to givethebox. On the top edges of the boxes, as shown in the drawings, I
preferably place a brass or other metal tube or rod slotted on one side to receive the upper edge of the box or netting, and when placed in position being secured to the netting or top of the box by soldering or other means, thus forming a smooth and pleasing finish to the top of the box, the wire-netting being cut from sheets in suitable dimensions to form the box desired, or the netting may be Woven with ornamental edges and in suitable dimensions to form the box.
The boxes are provided with devices to engage the brackets and hold them together. In Fig. 5 I have shown the form of device which I prefer. It consists of a socket 8, secured to the side and boti 0m of the box. The horizontal'portion of the-socket sets over the horizontal portion or step of the bracket, and the vertical portion of the socket embraces the riser ofthe bracket and is provided with .a hook 9 to hold the riser and socket together.
It is evident from the construction described and shown that when the trays or boxes are removed the brackets may be folded together into asmall compass for transportation or storage, and that when unfolded and set up with the trays or boxes in place the brackets and trays or boxes will support and hold each other in position. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A flower-stand consisting of angular brackets provided with steps or rests for supporting a flower-box and having swinging arms 5, which serve to hold the brackets in position, in combination with a flower-tray rest ing thereon and provided with an angular attaching-socket having means for engaging the steps and the risers of the stand, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY WESlPIIAL. Witnesses:
