DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 413,218, dated October 22, 1889.
Serial No. 293,026. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE WIRI K', of Rochelle, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Drilling-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to that classof drilling machines used for boring wells, &c.; and the object of the invention is to provide a new and improved drilling-machine which is simple and durable in construction and very effective in operation.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a'plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a front side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 0: act Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional end elevation of the same on'the liney y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a front side elevation of the drumwheel with the tripping device in section. Fig. 7 is a rear sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a sectional side elevation of part of the same in a different position. Fig. 9 is a sectional side elevation of the drumwheel. Fig. 10 is a sectional side elevation of the drum-stopping arms on the line .2 z of Fig. 5. Fig. 11 is a like view of the drumbrake on the line to w of Fig. 5. Fig. 12 is a plan view of alocking device for the tripping 'mechanism. Fig. 13 is an end elevation of part of the mast and its guides, and Fig. 14
is a sectional plan view of the fiy-wheel.
On a suitably-constructed frame A is mounted transversely the main driving-shaft B, connected in a suitable manner with the machinery for imparting a rotary motion to the said driving-shaft. On the shaft B is held to slide a clutch B, supported on a bell-crank lever B fulcrumed on themain frame A, and pivotally connected by the link B with the upright lever B", fulcrumed on the frontof the main frame and provided with the notch B adapted to engage a pin 13, secured on the main frame and serving to lock said lever B in place when the machine is to be stopped.
The teeth of the clutch B are adapted to engage correspondingly-shaped teeth on a sleeve 0, mounted to rotate loosely on the main driving-shaft B and carrying a sprocketwheel C, over which passes a sprocket-chain C also passing over the drumwheel D, mounted to rotate loosely on the shaft E, held in suitable bearings on the main frame A. The sprocket-chain 0 also passes over a guide-wheel C to preventsaid chain from becoming disengaged from the wheels D and C.
The wheel I) is preferably made as illustrated in Fig. 9, being composed of the body part D, having in its rim recesses D forming the projections D against one end of which rests a spring D placed in the recess D and resting at its other end against a pin or projection D, formed on the inside of a ring D, over which passes the sprocket-chain 0 before mentioned. The pin D projects through the ring D to the outside, forming the points for engaging the links of the sprocket-chain 0 When the chain O is set in motion from the main drivingshaft, it
exerts a pull 011 the ring D in the direction of the arrow a, and consequently said ring D with its pins D, exerts a pressure against the springs D thus making the said wheel D yielding, for the purpose hereinafter more fully described.
On the shaft E is secured the drum F, on
which is fastened one end of the rope G,sup-- porting the drilling-tool G at its other end.
The rope G passes from the drum F upward over a pulley G mounted to rotate at the upper end of the mast G secured between the vertical beams A by the bolts G and G passing through the said vertical beams A and the mast G When the lower bolt G is removed the mast GB, can be swun into a horizontal position on the bolt G, so as to permit an easy transportation of the entire machine. The rope G, soon after it leaves the drum F, passes through an aperture in the horizontal bar G secured to the main frame A. The rope G is also guided in a U-shaped arm G secured to the upper ends of the beams A. On the shaft E is secured an arm H, projecting through a recess F in one end of the drum F. The arm H is pressed against the shoulder formed by the recess F by a spring H, held in the drum F and resting at one end against the projection F formed on the inside of the said drum. The other end of the said spring presses against the arm H. The latter is adapted to be engaged by one end of a tripping-pawl I, fulcrumed on the rear face of the wheel D, and connected by a link I with a spring 1 secured on the said face of the wheel D. The outer end of the pawl I is adapted to be engaged by a notch J, formed in the arm J, secured on the shaft J mounted to turn in the wheel D and extending transversely through the same. 011 the front end of the said shaft J 2 is secured a curved arm J against the under side of which presses a Spring J, secured to one side of the wheel D.
The curved arm J is adapted to be engaged by a friction-roller K, secured on one end of an arm K, fastened to a gear -wheel K mounted to rotate loosely on the shaft E. The gear-wheel K meshes into a pinion K fastened on a shaft K mounted to turn in a suitable bearing on the main frame A and carrying a crank-arm K for imparting a rotary motion to the said shaft K A pawl K, fulcrumed on the main frame A opposite the pinion K is adapted to engage the teeth of the gear-wheel K serving to lock the latter in place. By turning the crank-arm K the gear-wheel K is rotated, and the arm K, by being fastened on the said gear-wheel, turns with the same, and consequently its frictionroller K assumes a different position. As the friction-roller K operates on the arm J 3 of the tripping device, the position of the said friction-roller regulates the stroke of the drillingtool G.
The arm J can be locked in position when disengaged from the pawl I by means of an arm L, secured on a shaft L, mounted to swing in suitable bearings fastened on the wheel D. The shaft L is held in place by a spring L secured on the wheel D and pressing against the said shaft. On the latter is formed an arm L standing at right angles to the arm L and adapted to be engaged by an arm L projecting from a lever L fulcruined on the transverse beams of the main frame A. When the lever L stands in an inclined position, its arm L does not engage the arm L of the shaft L; but when the said lever L is swung into a vertical position and the arm L is swung outward then the arm L passes over one end of the arm J and locks the latter in position until the wheel D, in its rot-ation, brings said arm L into contact with the arm L, whereby the latter pushes said arm L inward against the face of the wheel D, thereby throwing the arm L from over the free end of the arm J, and the latter can be again acted on by the curved arm J engaging the friction-roller K.
On the drum F is held the stop-arm N, provided with segmental straps N, secured to a semicircular strap N by means of bolts N The latter serve to adjust the arm N to any desired position on the drum F, and also to tighten the straps N N on the said drum. On the outer end of the stop-arm N is formed a hook N adapted to engage a pin 0, formed on an arm 0, pivoted on a rod 0 mounted to slide horizontally in suitable bearings in the main frame A. A pin 0 secured on the rod 0 prevents the downward motion of the arm 0, so that the latter can swing upward, but is prevented from swinging downward. On the reduced part of the rod 0 is coiled a spring 0 resting at one end against the frame A and at its other end against the shoulder formed by the reduced part. The spring 0 serves to hold the rod 0 in an outermost position, at the same time forming a cushion for the stop-arm N to strike against. The'outer end of the rod 0 is provided with notches 0 adapted to be engaged by a pawl O, pivoted on one of the beams A, and serving to lock the rod 0 in place whenever desired.
A lever P is pivotally connected with the rod 0 and also, by a link P, is connected with a brake strap P fitting against the drum F and pivotally connected at its other end with a rod P extending downward onto the base of the frame A and against one of the beams A, so that the said rod P is prevented from swinging. The rod P is also pivotally connected by a link P with the extreme lower end of the lever P, so that when the latter swings outward with the rod 0 the link P exerts a pull on the strap P so that the latter brakes the drum F.
On the outer end of the drum F is secured a ratchet-wheel Q, with which engages a pawl Q, fulcrumed on the main frame A and serving to prevent a return movement of the said drum F whenever desired. On the shaft E, next to the outer end of the drum F, is held loosely a disk R, provided with an arm R, carrying the pin R projecting inward and serving-to limit the mot-ion of the stop-arm N. slot R through which passes a bolt B on the outer end of which screws a nut R against the main frame A, so that the head of the bolt R presses said disk R against the frame A, thereby locking the said disk in any desired position. hen the nut R is loosened, the disk R can be shifted until the pin R assumes a certain relative position in regard to the arm N. The nut R is then screwed up, as above described, so as to lock said disk in place, and so that the pin lit will prevent too great a movement of the arm N.
The operation is as follows: When the lever B is disengaged from the pin B, as illustrated in 2, the clutch B engages by its teeth the corresponding teeth of the sleeve 0, so that when the shaft Bis rotated said sleeve 0 receives a rotary motion and by the sprocket-wheel C and chain 0 imparts a corresponding motion to the wheel D in the The disk R is provided with a segmental direction of the arrow at. The rotary motion of the latter brings its pawl I at every revolutionin contact with the arm H, secured on the shaft E, so that the said arm H is carried along against the tension of the spring H, thereby turning the drum F and winding up the rope G. raises the drilling'tool G. The arm J locks the pawl I in position, as shown in Fig. 8, until the wheel D in one revolution brings the curved arm J 3 under the friction-roller K, so that the latter, 011 the outward movement of the wheel D, presses said arm J 3 inward, so that the arm J, with its hook J, is swung outward and the latter is disengaged from the pawl I. The weight of the drilling-tool G, as well as the force of the spring H, causes a return movement of the arm I-l' past the pawl I, so that the drum F becomes free to rotate and the weight of the drilling-toolrotates the ,drum, and the said tool drops downward.
When the arm H was moving forward in the direction of the arrow at, as before described, it caused the stopping-arm N to swing in the same direction, and when the drum F is free to rotate, as above described, then the stopping-arm N swings in the inverse direction of the arrow at with the drum until its hooked end N strikes forcibly against the pin 0, which limits its swinging motion, and also the rotary motion of the drum F, whereby a further unwinding of the rope G is prevented and the drilling-tool G has arrived at the end of its downward stroke. IVhen the arm N strikes against the arm O, the rod 0 moves outward against the tension of the spring 0 and at the same time the lever P is swung outward and by its link P and the strap P brakes the drum F.
WVh e11 the operator desires to stop the downward stroke of the drilling-tool G,he throws the pawl Q in contact with the ratchet-wheel Q, so that the stopping-arm N is free to make its forward movement in the direction of the arrow a, as above described, but is prevented from making its return-stroke, as the said pawl Q engages the ratchel-wheel Q.
When the operator desires to increase the stroke of the drilling-tool G, he disengages the pawl K from the gear-wheel K and then turns the hand-wheel K so as to turn the shaft K, which by its pinion K turns the said gear-wheel K in the direction of the arrow a, thereby moving the friction-roller K into a diiferent position in the direction of the arrow (1. When the desired position is reached, the pawl K is again thrown in contact with the gear-wheel K and when the wheel D is now rotated, as above described, the tripping of the pawl I takes place at longer intervals than before, so that the arm H travels a longer distance before the pawl I is disengaged, and consequently more of the rope Gis'wound. The pawl I is always moved to its former position by being connected by the link I with the spring I The arms J and J 3 are always returned to their original The winding of the rope G positions by the spring J 4 acting on the under side of the arm J The arms J 3 and J, being secured on the same shaft J move simultaneously.
WVhen the operator desires to stop the machine, he throws the lever B into the posi tion shown in Fig. 2, so that the clutch B is disengaged from the sleeve 0, and the latter ceases its motion with the main driving-shaft B, which may continue its rotary motion. The shaft B is provided with a compensating fly-wheel of any approved construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
