SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,890, dated October 15, 1889.. Application filed April 25, 1889. Serial No. 308,615. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID G. NOACK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated ap- IO plying that principle, so as to distinguish it view of the rotary packing-holder of the modifrom other inventions.
My invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a reverse plan view of the gage-cock. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, certain portions being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail face viewof the inner portion of the recess of the modified form. Fig. 4 isa reverse plan fied form. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section of the modified form. Fig. 6 is a side elevation view of the gage-cock in raised or open position. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the spindle and rotary packing-holder of the preferred form, showing the manner of locking the two together.

At its upper portion are the lugs a, in which is pivoted the lug b, integral with the weight-lever B. Recess c is formed in the forward portion of said lever, and journaled transversely through the walls of said recess is the spindle cl, having a thumb-button d on its outer end. Spiral spring 6 is slipped over said spindle intermediate of said button and the side of the le- V61,Wl;lll6 the opposite end of the lever is held in position by pin e, said pin fitting and resting in the slots f, and thereby the spindle is prevented from turning, asthe spring normally holds said pin in said slot. Rotary packing-holder G is located within said recess and fits on said spindle, slot g engaging with lug g, which locks said packing holder in rigid engagement with said spindle. A series of four cup-shaped disks h are formed at regular intervals on said packing-holder,
each of which disks is provided with a pcripheral slot h. rubber seat or packingj.
The operation is as follows: Let it be understood that one of the rubber disks or seats is in engagement with the discharge-nipple, that the seat has become worn, and that it is desired to renew the same or bring a new seat into engagement with the discharge-nipple. Pressure is brought to bear on the th umbbutton (1, thus compressing the spring and freeing the pin 6. from engagement with the slot f. The rotary packing-holder may now be rotated a quarter-turn, which will bring a new seatj in position to come into contact with the nipple, when the pin 6 automatically catches in the slot f and retains the packingholder in adjustment. As the worn-out seat is moved downwardly, the sloth registers with the slot k on the lever. Any suitable instrument may be inserted to force out the rubber seat, and a new seat may be fitted in its place without lifting the lever or in any way disturbing the adjustment of the gage-cock, or all four seats maybe used one after the other before any are renewed.
Referring to the modified form, Fig. 5, a spindle l is journaled longitudinally through the weighted lever. On its outer extremity the spindle is provided with a thumb-button Z, and its inner extremity is furnished with a saucer-shaped disk or rotary packing-holder m, in which fits seat m, that is secured in position by screw 12. Spiral spring n is slipped over the outer end of said spindle and has e'ngagement at one extremity with the thumbbutton and at its opposite extremity with the lever. Said spring serves to hold the ribs 0, that are provided on the back of the rotary packing, in engagement with the slots 0 of the lever,and prevents the rotation of the packing, except when the spindle is pushed forward.
The operation of the modified form is as fol" lows: Let it be understood that the portion of the packing in engagement with the nipple is worn and it is desired to bring a fresh portion in engagement with the same. The button is pressed forward to free the lugs o from engagement with the slots 0, and the spindle is then turned a sufficient distance to bring a new and unused portion of the packing opposite the nipple. lVhen the entire seat is worn,
Fitting in each disk is a the screw it is removed, new packing inserted in the packing-holder, and the screw replaced in position. As soon as lugs are opposite slots 0 and pressure is removed from the button, the pressure of the spring automatically causes said lugs to be drawn into said slots.
It will be noticed that in both the preferred form and the modified form the discharge-oribe made therein, provided the principles of construction respectively recited in the following claims are employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. In a gage-cock, a rotary packing-holder provided with two or more independent removable seats, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gage-cock, the combination, with a rotary packing-holder, of a spindle engaging therewith, said spindle extending beyond the side of said gage-cock, whereby it may be turned, substantially as set forth.
3. In a gage-cock, the combination, with a rotary packing-holder, of a springpressed spindle engaging with said packing-holder, said spindle having a projecting portion, whereby it may be turned, and being springpressed, whereby it may be held in position, substantially as set forth.
i. In a gage-cock, the combination of a rotary packing holder having one or more seats, a spindle having engagement therewith and provided with a thumb-nut, and a spring engaging with said spindle, substantially as set forth.
5. A gage-cock provided with a rotary nipple-engaging device having a series of faces located angularly to each other, substantially as set forth.
6. In a gage-cock, the combination,with a discharge-pipe, of a weight havingpivotal engagement with said discharge-pipe and provided with a seat adapted to engage with said pipe, said discharge-pipe provided with a downwardly-inclinin g discharge-orifice, whereby as the weight is raised the issuing water will clear said seat, substantially as set forth.
7. In a gage cook, the combination of a weight provided with. a recess, a spindle pivoted in the walls of said recess, a rotary packing-holder provided with sockets secured to said spindle, seats fitting in said sockets, said spindle provided with a thumb-nut, whereby it may be turned, spring-locking mechanism that holds said packing-holder in stationary position, and a discharge-nipple to which said weight is journaled, substantially as set forth.
