SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,848, dated October l5, 1889.
Application filed July 6, 1889. Serial No. 316,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSON HOL'- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Era, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Vheel, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wheels. Ileretofore great difficulty has been experienced in the construction of wheels in putting the axle-box in the hub and getting it true.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the above difficulty and improve and strengthen the construction ofv wheels, and
'especially the manner of securingthe spokes in the hubs.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the hub and spokes. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hub, the spokes being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4L. is a perspective view of t-he axle-box. Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modification of the axle-box. Figs. G and 7 are detail views of the lower end of one of the spokes.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hub,which is composed of two sections A that are adapted to be clamped around an axleboX B by means of suitable bands C, whereby the necessity of driving and welding the axle-box in the hub is dispensed with and the adjustment of said box B is rendered easy. In order to prevent the displacement of the axle-box B, the latter is provided at each end with laterally-projecting iianges b,
which are wedge shape in cross-section,whereby they may easily be forced into a Wooden hub, but suitable recesses a are provided in the metal hub A to receive the iianges h. The axle-box B is provided at its ends with annular ilanges b', which engage shoulders a of the hub and prevent longitudinal movement of the box.
The sections A of the hubA are constructed of suitable metal and are fitted closely together, and are designed to be coated on their meeting faces With some suitable substance to exclude moisture from the axle-box; and the said sections are provided with suitable sockets d2, which are adapted for the reception of spokes D, which, after being inserted in the sockets d2, are wedged from the inner face of the sections of the hub A, which will successfully prevent the spokes leaving the sockets. The wedges E are preferably three in number, two e running one way and one e the other, the wedge c preferably beingin three pieces for convenience.
The spokes D, which are provided with suitable shoulders, are strengthened by metallic braces F, which are arranged at the sides of the spokes and have their lower endsV enlarged, which prevents the braces leaving the sockets of the hub A. The braces have their upper ends secured to the spokes by bands G, which are provided with bolts which pass through the spokes and braces and prevent the bands slipping.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated an axle-box having lateral flanges b at its sides, but no annular ones at its ends, which adapts the axle-box for wagons designed for light work; and I desire it to be understood thatl do not limit myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, as I may, Without departing from the spirit of the inventi on, make various minor changes therein.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
