UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. BRIGGS, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE L. A. XVEY- BURN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MECHANISM FOR MAKING SHARES FOR LISTING-FLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,320, dated October 8, 1889. Application filed November 10, 1887. Serial No. 254.838. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Manufacturing Shares for Listing-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce machines for manufacturing shares for listing-plows with less waste of material than heretofore.
This invention consists, essentially, of improved dies and die-supports for forming blanks into shares.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a female-die base and anvil. Fig. 2 is a male-die drop and hammer. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the dotted'line a; m of Fig. 2 of the die'base, anvil, drop, and hammer just mentioned, in operative relation. Fig. i is a male spreading-die. Figs. 5, 6, 7, S,- and 9 are respectively views of share-blanks 2 5 in different stages of manufacture and a share,
all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
,0 A represents a die-block, of any suitable form and construction.
A represents a die-section, which may be integral with the base A or not, as desired.
A represents a combined drop-stop and 5 anvil.
A represents a vertical strengthening-rib, for strengthening the parts A A which is shown only in Fig. 3.
B represents a die-block, of any suitable 0 form and construction.
B represents a detachable interchangeable upsetting-die section secured to the drop B i by means of the bolts B B represents a combined hammer and drop- 5 stop, which, in conjunction with the combined stop and anvil A serves both to straighten.
share-blanks that have been warped by upsetting and spreading the same, and to stop the die-block B and any die secured thereto at the required distance from the die-section 0 represents a detachable spreading-die section, which is interchangeable with the upsetting-die section B, as indicated by the dotted lines at as in Fig. 2.
D represents a listing-plow share-blank of the form ordinarily used for manufacturing listing-plow shares. v
E represents a listing-plow share-blank of substantially the form employed in inanufac- 6o turing listing-plow shares with my improved' machine.
It may be seen by an inspection and comparison of the two forms just referred to that the V-shaped notch E in the heel of the blank E is about one-third smaller than the corresponding notch D in the heel of the shareblank D, that the distance between the points E of the share-blank E is considerably less than the corresponding distance between the points D of the share-blank D, and that the portions F that have been cut from the blank E are of less dimensions than the corresponding portions D that have been out from the blank D. 7 5
It will be found in practice that a saving of about one-third may be realized in the amount of material required to manufacture listingplow shares by cutting the blanks for the same of substantially the form and proportions shown in Fig. 5, and afterward subjecting them to the following process:
In order to manufacture alist-ing-plow share most advantageouslywithmy machine, I take a share-blank of substantially the form and proportions represented by E in Fig. 5, and heat the V-shaped portion thereof until plastic enough to readily yield to hammer-strokes. I nextplace the blank, point downward, into the die-section A, and cause the die-block B, 0 with its upsetting-die section B, to descend, whereupon the inner portion of the V-shaped notch in the blank will have been upset, as shown by the notch F in the blank F, Fig. (3. Having substituted the spreading-die section O for the upsetting-die section B, reheat the upset share-blank F and replace it in the diesection A, and allow the die-block B, with itsspreading-die section O, to descend upon the same, whereupon the upset share-blank will I00 have been spread and made to assume the form D. (Shown in Fig. 8.)
G, Fig. 7, represents the blank F after being upset and spread, as above described, and
having the edges G thereof thinned by heating and hammering the same.
Fig. 9 shows a completed listing-plow share, formed from the upset and spread share-blank G, after having its edges G thinned and trimmed and having been shaped in shapingdies.
It is necessary to upset the V-shaped notch, especially the inner portion. thereof, in the heel of a share-blank, in order to mass together the requisite amount of material to be spread into a full-Width blank.
If the inner portion of the notch in any share-blank is not sufficiently upset before the share is subjected to the operation of spreading, the portions of the share adjacent thereto will thereby become attenuated to such a degree as to render the blank unfit for use in making a share.
I claim The herein-described mechanism for shaping blanks for. shares of listing-plows, consisting of a die-block A, provided With the diesection A, the die-block B, and the interchangeable upsetting and spreading die sections B and 0, all constructed and to be operated substantiahy as described.
GEORGE S. BRIGGS. Witnesses:
. O. O. BRIGGS,
L. L. MORRISON.
