EARL SIVEM, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,136, dated September 17, 1889.
Application filed July 1, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EARL SWEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing-needles, and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this character which can be quickly and readily threaded, and which will possess advantages in point of inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a needle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan View.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a needle, which is in the main of the ordinary or preferred construction, provided at one end with an elongated eye a. Near the inner end of the eye, at one side, is provided an opening for the passage of the thread, formed by separating the side of the eye at the point mentioned into an inner and outer arm I) b, respectively, the said arms being on a line Serial No. 316,265. (No model.)
with each other. The free end of the arm I) is flat, While the opposing end of the arm I) is beveled inwardly, the edge of which being slightly separated from the inner arm. A groove 0 is thus formed between the arms, into which the thread as it is drawn along the needle falls, when it can be pulled into the eye, the arm I) yielding sufliciently for that purpose.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described needle, provided with an elongated eye, one side of which being formed by a rigid arm I), having a squared end, the face of the latter being at right angles to said arm, and a spring or yielding arm I), having its end inwardly beveled and projecting nearly to the end of arm I), said arms being in the same longitudinal plane, andforming conjunctively a V-shaped notch open at its contracted end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EARL S'WEM.
