ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 410,689, dated September 10, 1889.

Application filed March 26, 1889x To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN C. HOLLINGS, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fixtures for Lights, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

As fixturessuch as chandeliers,brackets, &c.are now made, much trouble and ineonvenience are experienced in applying to the same'electric wires employed either to convey the electric current to an incandescent light bulb or merely to convey electricity to a lighting contrivance. To obviate this difficulty and avoid making holes in the outer covering or jacket of the fixture and to avoid taking the fixture down, I have separated the jacket or covering of the fixture, so that one part may be moved longitudinally on or with relation to the other and with relation to the main standard or a fixed part of the fixture, the movement of the covering, as described, affording ready access for the wire into the space between the covering and the standard or rigid part of the fixture. To yet further aid in this operation of wiring the fixture, as it is called, I provide a locking device whereby two parts of the covering may be locked together when shortened by telescopic movement, so as to be moved together by the operator.

My invention consists, essentially, in the combination,with the standard or body of a fixture, of a longitudinally-movable or telescopic covering; also the combination,with the standard or body of a fixture, of atelescopic covering and a locking device, substantially as will be described.

Figure 1 in elevation represents a fixture supposed to be extended from a piece of gas or other pipe protruded through the ceiling, the main standard of the fixture being inclosed by one form of a jacket or covering embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section of the fixture shown in Fig. 1, but with the covering shortened by telescoping one part into the other, the covering being supposed to be held up by the hand of the operator or otherwise so as to Serial No. 304,846. It will of course be understood in practice that the standard and arms will be covered with a suitable jacket or covering to constitute the exterior orornamental part of the fixture, such jacket or covering being composed chiefly of tubes of brass or other material and of ornamental portions in great variety.

The jacket or covering herein shown is supposed to consist, essentially, of a tube 1) and a tube a, which are telescopically arranged one with relation to the other outside of and to surround the standard a. One part of the jacket or covering, as c, is shown as provided with a collar, as 0', through which is extended a locking device, as (1, shown as a set-screw, the inner end of the set-screw acting against the exterior of the part b,thus enabling the covering when moved telescopically one part with relation to the other to be fixed together, so that the operator by engaging any part of the covering may lift the same to obtain ready access to the wire below the lower part c of the covering. The collar 0 is shown as connected to the tube 0 by a set-screw 3.

It will be obvious that the external appearance of the covering may be varied Without departure from my invention so long as the covering is telescopically arranged; and, further, it will be obvious that my invention may be applied to any form of fixture wherein it is desired to conceal a wire between the covering and the main body or standard of the fixture composed of'a cheaper material than its covering.

I claim 1.
