UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALKER C. TYLER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MERRY-GO-ROUNI).
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,301, dated September 3, 1889.
l Application filed April 27, 1889. Serial No. 308,839. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALKER C. TYLER, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Merry-Go-Rounds; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of holiday amusement devices commonly known as merry-go-rounds, in which a rotating frame carries a series of seats in the form of carriages, horses, boats, &c.f; and my invention consists in the constructions and combinations of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a vertical cross-section of onehalf of my merry-go-round. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, part of the platform being broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
A is a central fixed mast or pole.
B is a platform around the mast and supported therefrom by guys b, which are connected with a rotary collar a on the mast. A rotary movement is imparted to the plat-form by means of a power-cable C, seated in a groove in the periphery of said platform and driven by suitable power. The platform is supported upon radial beams D, the inner 'f ends of which fit in a hub d around the ceutral mast.
Bolted to the inner ends of these beams is a ring d', to which are hinged or pivoted at c the swinging arms E, the outer ends of which are free to move up and down. Beneath the platform is a fixed level track F, on which travelwheels f, connected with the beams I), and which are adapted to support the platform in case too much Weight is placed upon it, though normally the Wheels do not touch the track. A second fixed track G is also placed beneath the platform concentric with and just outside of the track F. This track G is not a level one; but its surface is undulating, as shown, and upon this undulating track are mounted and travel the wheels g, which are secured to the outer or free ends of t-he swinging arms E. The arms are properly connected with the beams by means of links e', which, while permitting the upand-down movement of said arms, keep them in relative position between the beams.
The seats are of various forms-such as boats, horses, dre-and these are arranged in concentric annular series. In my arrangement I prefer to have the outermost seats in the shape of boats, (represented by H,) andin order to avoid giving an excess vof rocking motion to the boats I provide for the connection of one end to the platform and the other end to one r of the swinging arms E. do this, I extend one of each pair of .arms E out farther than the other,- and to this longer arm I connect one end of the boat, as shown at h, connecting its other end at h to the platform.
The inner series of seats are in the shape of horses, (represented by I.) These are mounted on boards i, one end of said boards being connected with one of the arms E, and the other end with the other arm E, the connection being by means of hooks and pins, (shown nat 1'.) The innermost horses of the series I prefer to give easier motion to, and to do this I pivot the boards of said horses centrally to a fixed brace j, as shown at J, one end of said board being connected with one of the swinging arms E and the other end being free to play up and down.
The operation of the device is obvious. As the platform rotates, the seats accompany it and receive a rocking motion from the undulating track G.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a merrygoround, the rotating platform and the series of swinging radial arms carried thereby, in combination with the seats I, pivoted at one end to one of said arms and at the other end to another of said arms, the Wheels carried bysaid arms, and Vthe undulating track G, on which said wheels travel, substantially as described.
2. In a merrygoround, the combination of the central mast, the rotating platform supported thereby, the radial beams of said platform, the Series of Swinging radial arms In witness whereof I have hereunto set my carried by said beams, the series of seats hand. Y
connected with the swinging arms, the Wheels carried by the beams and the arms, and the VALKER C. TYLER. 5 level track and Jche undulating track on Which said Wheels travel, all arranged and Titnessesz adapted to operate substantially as de- S. H. NOURSE, 4 scribed. J. H. BLOOD.
