PIPE-EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,282, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed January 7, 1889. Serial No. 295,636. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN JARDINE and PETER JARDINE, both of Hespeler, in the county of Vaterloo, in the Province oi' Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Expanders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal elevation ot' our improved tube-expander. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the end at the left hand of Fig. l, the central mandrel omitted to clearly show the surrounding parts. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the end at the right hand of Fig. 1, the mandrel omitted. Fig. 4 is a section on line Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sections composing the body of the expander.
Our invention has for its object to combine in a tube-expander certain features ot con struction, whereby a larger or smaller mandrel can be used to expand tubes of different sizes.
Our invention consists in the construction of a tube-expander having a cylindrical body or stock composed of sections converging radially, and expansively connected by equiangularly-arranged bars to keep said sections expansively together, so that by the use ot a larger mandrel the body or stock can be expanded to suit larger' tubes.
A is a tapering mandrel inserted in the cylindrical and tubular body or stock of the expander, said body composed of three or more longitudinal sections B B B2, converging radially. Each section hasa longitudinal slot, said slots each containing a swage-roller C, Without journals, and rotating frictionally against a side of the slot during the rotation of the mandrel. The sections B B B2 are formed with a retnrn-ange a, to bear against the tube-sheet of the boiler when the sections are inserted in the tube to be expanded, and said sections are connected to expand radially apart by equiangularly-arranged bars 0r slides D D D2. One end of each bar or slide is xed in a hole in each section by'a pinching-screw d, and the other end passes through a hole in the next section, whereby the said sections.
will slide on the bars and expand radially apart to enlarge the circumference to suit various-sized tubes, and by using a larger mandrel the sections can be `further expanded. The bars D D D2 cross a bore b in the outer end of the sections B B B2, to prevent escape ot` the rollers endwise after the roller is entered through the bore into the slot before the sections are connected, and said slots are J OI-IN JARDINE. PETER JARDINE.
