Be it known that we, HARDY M. CLARK, JAMES TAYLOR, and J AMES B. HENSHAW, citizens of the United States, residing at Manning, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Steam- Generator, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to steam-generators for supplying` steam for agricultural and other purposes, mainly for the purpose of cooking feed and for driving light machinery; and it has for its object to provide a device which shallV be simple in construction and which shall be so arranged as to economize fuel to the greatest possible extent.
With this end in View the invention con sists, mainly, in the construction and arrangement of the boiler or generator' within a suitable casing which completely surrounds the same and forms a chamber for the passage of the` products of combustion, substantially as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is .a perspective view of our improved steam-generator. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. A designates a furnace or fire-box, which consists of an annular casing, which is provided with a suitably-arranged rocking and tilting grate B. One of the sides of the furnace or fire-box is provided with an inclined chute C, having a hinged lid or door D, through which fuel may be fed into the combustion-chamber. The latter is provided near its upper end with inwardly-extending lugs or brackets E E to support the steam-generator, which consists of a vertical cylindrical boiler F, having a series of tubes or flues G G, extending vertically through the same for the passage of the products of combustion. rIhe bottom of the boiler F is provided with a central opening H, over which is secured a conical deflector I, extending upwardly into the boiler and serving to greatly increase the heating-surface of the latter.
Secured to a rim or iiange J at the upper end of the combustion-chamber is a cylindrical casing K, which completely surrounds the boiler and extends some distance above the latter. A narrow space L is left between the outer wall of the boiler and the inner side of the shell or casing A. A top or cover Mis secured detachably to the upper side of the latter by means of turned buttons N N, which are attached pivotally to a ange O at the upper end of the-casing and extend through slot-SE in the said top or cover. A smokestack Q is attached to the said cover for the escape of the products of combustion, and the said cover is provided with openings for the 'passage of the steam-pipes R and S, the former of which is provided with a safetyvalve T, mounted upon a lever U, which is pivoted to a standard V, suitably mounted upon the top of cover M of the casing, and which is provided in the usual manner with an adjustable weight XV.
To the steam-pipe S may be attached a pipe X for conveying the steam to the point where it is to be used. Suitable means are also provided for supplying water to the boiler. Trycocks Y Y are also suitably connected to the boiler and extended through the shank or casing K and through the fire-box at any convenient points.
Z designates an annular water-chamber arranged in the .combustion-chamber below the boiler and connected with the bottom of the latter by means of tubes a a,... The front side of the said annular water-chamber has a vertical opening b, registering with the inclined chute Q, through which fuel is fed into the fire-box. The ash-pit of the latter below the grate is provided with draft-openings c c, adapted to be closed or partially closed by means of a damper d, whereby the draft may be regulated.
The operation of this invention and its advantages will be readily'understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The 'con- Ico struction is exceedingly simple and of such a nature as to enable the complete apparatus, comprising the boiler and furnace, to be conveniently moved from one place to another. The furnace or fire-box is of such a nature as to enable any kind of fuel to be used that maybe more convenient, and by the arrangement of the exterior shell or casing the boiler or steam-generator is completely enveloped by the products of combustion in their up- Ward passage, thereby causing steam to be generated rapidly and at a comparatively small expense. The conical deflector in the bottom of the boiler also serves to considerably increase the Yheating-surface, thereby dispensing With an unnecessarily large number of fines, which in boilers of this class 'are always more or less troublesome. The annular water-chamber arranged in the fire-box greatly increases the capacity of the boiler, and, furthermore, increases the heating-surface, thereby economizing fuel. The top of the shell or casing K being removable, as described, access may readily be had to the interior, and the parts of the device are all constructed and arranged with a view to simplicity or durability.
Having thus described our invention, We elaine l. In a steam-generator, the combination of an annular ire-boX or furnace provided near its upper end with inwardly-extending lugs or brackets, a vertical tubular boiler mounted upon the said bracket, and an annular Waterchamber arranged within the fire-box and connected with the bottom of the boiler by means of vertical tubes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. In a steam-generator, the combination of an annular furnace or fire-box having an iuclined chute provided with a suitable lid or door, and provided near its upper edge with inwardly-extending lugs or brackets, a vertical tubular boiler mounted upon the said brackets, an annular Water-chamber arranged Within the iire-box, suitably connected with the bottom of the boiler, and having an opening in its front side registering with the inclined feed-chute of the fire-box, and a shell or casing attached to the upper side of the furnace or fire-box and enveloping the boiler, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a steam-generator, the combination of an annular furnace or fire-box having an inclined feed-chute, an annular Water-chamber arranged Within said fire-box and having an opening to register with the said chute, a vertical tubular boiler mounted upon lugs or brackets at the upper end of the fire-box and suitably connected with the annular Waterchamber, a shell or casing attached to the upper side of the furnace orv fire-box and enveloping the boiler, a cover secured detachably to the said shell or casing and having an upwardly-extending smoke-stack, and steampipes and try-cocks extending from the boiler respectively through the top and sides of the casing substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
