HARNESS ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,029, dated August 2'7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LIONEL D. SAXTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of J ackson'and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to prevent horses or other animals from getting the tail over the lines or reins ordinarily used in driving; and to this end it consists, substantially, of a flexible band, wire, or strip of metal or of other suitable material so bent and adapted to the shape of the animal and so attached to the harness and held in position that it Will be easily deflected by any movement of the animals tail and carry the lines or reins with it in every case out of danger of engagement by the solid body or fleshy part of the tail.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view illustrating my invention. Fig. 11 is anelevation.

Referring to the figures, the device will be seen to consist of a how 2, attached to the harness 1 and made of such length as to extend around the thigh and buttock and over the tail a few inches below its root, close to but not in continuous contact therewith, and 0f the bail-shaped suspender5, of flexible but springy Wire or other material, whose office is to support the how 2 and to assist in restoring it to its normal position after movement. The bow is loosely attached to the harness at its ends at 3 by loops 7 or the equivalent, and the suspenders are firmly attached at 6 by means of a loop 8, formed in the apex of the Suspender 5.

Minor adjustments of the device to the size and shape of the horse are easily eftectedby slight changes in the curves of the frame.

In .any necessary erection of the tail it comes in contact with the bow in the bend t in the top thereof, when the suspenders 5 yield by bending and the bow is raised. In switching the tail from side to side it is brought in contact with the bow just below the upper bend 4, and the whole device swings easily from side to side with a tendency to return to its normal position. In every position which may be given to the frame by the tail the lines are found to be so deflected thereby as to prevent their engagement by the solid or fleshy part of the tail.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The attachment for harness herein described, consisting of a bow 2, having at its upper end a single projecting bend 4, and suspender 5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an attachment for harness, the combination of the bow 2 and the bail-shaped Suspender 5, of spring-wire, attached thereto and having a loop 8 formed in its apex, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In an attachment for harness, the combination of the bow 2, having at its upper end a single projecting bond 4, and the bailshaped suspender 5, the ends of which are attached thereto at each side of the bow, and having a loop 8 formed in its apex, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
