Description

F. W. MANN 8v C. H. PARRINGTON.
MACHINE FOR GRINDING BONE.
Patented Aug. Z0, 1889...
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN XV. MANN AND CLARENCE I-I. FARRINGTON, OF MILFORD, MASSA- CI-IUSETTS; SAID FARRINGTON ASSIGNOR TO SAID MANN.
MACHINE FOR GRINDING BONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,480, dated August 20, 18189.
Application tiled February 8, lSSfl. Serial No. 299,152. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN WV. MANN and CLARENCE H. FARRINGTON, both of Mil` ford, county of Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Grinding Bone, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. Y
In the manufacture of bone-meal for poul try it has heretofore been customary to crush or grind the dried. bone; but such meal is not as nutritious as when made from fresh bone having thereon the serapnneat and within the marrow.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of grinding or cutting machines, as will be hereinafter described, whereby fresh bone having the meat thereon and the marrow within it may be ground or cut.
Figure l shows in vertical section a machine for grinding bone embodying this invention, the operating-handle being broken off; Fig. 2, a plan view of the machine shown in Fig. l, the cross-bar employed. for moving the platen or follower being removed; Fig. 3, an under side view of the rotatable knife carrying bottom plate; and Fig. 4 a perspective view of one of the knives.
The cylinder a is provided at its lower end at each side with lugs a', by which it is secured to the side frames a2 by suitable bolts a3. The cylinder a is provided with a diametrically-arranged partitionwall a4, extended from the top nearly to the bottom, and leaving suiiieient space under it for the passage of the knives in their rotation. Said cylinder is also provided at the center with a vertical standard or support a5, formed integral with said division-wall.
A bottom plate b is loosely mounted on a support or rod b', arranged vertically within the support er", and held rigidly by the setscrew b2, a nut or flange b3 being turned on or formed integral with the bar a to assist in holding the said bottom plate in position. The bottom plate h is made larger in diameter than the cylinder a, and is provided outside the said cylinder with teeth to form a beveled gear b4.-
A shaft c, having its bearings in a block c', secured to one of the side frames a2 by the aforesaid bolts as, has fixed to it a beveled 5 5 gear c2, which engages and drives the beveled gear b4, said shaft c being rotated by a handwheel c3, also fixed to it.
The bottom plate l) is provided with a series of holes extending through it and ar- 6o ranged adjacent to lugs d, formed integral with said plate, the said holes being large enough to receive the cutting-edges of the knives d', and also to afford a passage for the exit of the material after it is ground or cut.
The knives which I preferably employ consist of a flat bar grooved longitudinally, as at 2, and having a slot 3 and beveled at one end, as best shown in Fig. 4, to form, in co-operation with the grooves 2, a series of sharp teeth. 7o
The knives d are secured to the lugs d by set-screws d2, passing through the slots 3, and set-screws (Z3 pass through the lower projecting ends of said lugs and bear against the rear ends of the knives d, said set-screws d2 75 (Z3 holding the knives rigidly, but affording proper adjustment. The knives d', secured adj ustably to the lugs, as described, are in-` clined with relation to the bottom plate h, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the cuttingedges So only project slightly above the upper surface of said plate.
A platen or follower' c, of suitable size to enter and move freely within the cylinder a,
i s secured to a yoke or frame c', the said 85 platen or follower being slotted to receive the division-wall at. The yoke is arranged to slide freely on the rod b', normally resting by gravity upon the bottom plate h, or upon any material'contained in the cylinder, and a 9o cross-bar or handle f is turned upon the screwthreaded end j" of said rod b to force the yoke and follower down.
In operation the material is placed in the cylinder a directly upon the bottom plate, and the handle-bar f turned to force 4the platen down firmly upon the material. The bottom plate is then revolved by the hand-wheel, and the knives act to cut the material. IVe preferably arrange the knives at different distances roo from the center or axis of rotation of the bottom plate, as shown in Fig. 3.
By providing grooved knives, as shown, they may be ground by the user upon a flatsurfaced stone Without destroying or decreasing the size of the teeth.
WVe claiml. In a machine for grinding or cutting bone, the cylinder a, rotatable bottom plate and knives carried by it, and means, substantially as described, for rotating said bottom plate, combined with the platen or follower e, yoke e', and cross-bar or handle f, and the fixed support or rod b', having the screwthreaded end f', whereby the platen may be moved vertically, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for. grinding or cutting bone, the fixed cylinder a, having the Xed division-Wall extended from the top to near the bottom of saidvcylinder, combined with the rotatable bottom plate and knives carried by it, and means, substantially as described, for rotating the bottom plate, the split platen or follower, slotted to receive the division- Wall, and means, substantially as described, for moving it independently of the bottom plate, substantially as described.
3. In a vmachine for grinding or cutting bone, the xed cylinder a and partition-Wall a4, combined with the rotatable bottom plate, knives carried by it and inclined with relation thereto, and means, substantially as described, to rotate said plate, the split platen or follower, its yoke, and the cross-bar f and fixed support b', having the screw-threaded end f', as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. In a machine for grinding or cutting bone, the fixed cylinder a and division-Wall a4, combined with the rotatable bottom plate b, having a series of holes therein at different distances from its center, lugs d adjacent to said holes, adjustable slotted knives carried by said lugs, inclined with relation to the bottom plate, set-screws d2 (Z3 to adjust said knives, and means, substantially as described, for rotating said plate, 'and the slotted platen or follower, its yoke and cross-bar, and the fixed support b,having the screw-threaded end f', substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANKLIN W. MANN. CLARENCE H. FARRINGTON.
