CHECK-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,294, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed. December 26, 1888. $erialN0.29 l,694=. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. LocK- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairtield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to clieclepunches, and has for its object to improve upon the construction shown and described in the pending application, Serial No. 289,210, filed October 26, 1888, by Friend WV. Smith, J12, and Samuel S. Williamson.
My invention consists in providing a hook on the under side of the operating-lever,which hook during the radial swing of said lever shall normally extend immediately beneath the heads of the pins which carry the punches, so that after the lever has been depressed against the head of a pin the elevation of said lever will cause said hook to engage the head of the pin on the under side and thereby lift said pin and its attached punch independent of the coil-spring around the pin.
The accompanying drawing shows a sectional elevation of a check-punch, such as is shown and described in the aforesaid pending application, the parts constituting the feed mechanism being broken away.
In the operation of the check-punch made in accordance with the invention shown and described in the said pending application, the fact has been developed that the punches will sometimes stick in the dies, owing to the buckling and interlocking of the coils of the springs around the punch-pins. I have therefore in this invention aimed to secure a positive action of said pins, and the following description will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to have a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same.
R is the operating-lever, and l-l the punchcarrying pins, all constructed and operating precisely as set forth in the said pendin application.
15 are the heads of the pins, and 16 the coilsprings around the pins.
Depending from the under side of the lever R is a hook 25,Which I prefer to form integral with said lever. This hook extends forward immediatelybeneath the heads 15 of thepins, the latter being arranged in the are of a circle described by said hook when the lever is swung. Then the lever is depressed against one of the heads to operate a punch, thehook will be carried down with thelever, and when the latter is returned to elevated position said,
hook will abut against the under side of said head and thereby lift the punch positively.
In a check-punch, the combination, with a series of independently-operating punches having heads extending in the arc of a circle in the same horizontal plane, and a single operating-lever adapted to swing from the center of said arc, of a hook depending from said lever to a normal position immediately beneath said heads, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
FREDERICK J. LOCIUVOOD.
