To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC T. DYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State et' Illinois, have invented newand useful Improvements in Apparatus for IIeating Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal elevation ol a locomotive-boiler and lire-box, part in elevation and part in section, an air-pump in section, and an elevation of the other portion of the apparatus by which a car is heated Fig. 2, a plan or top view ot' the air-pipes in the lire-box removed; Fig. f3, a sectional elevation otl the injector and its connections.
In brief, the invention consistsin air-pipes placed in the tire-boX and an air-pump to force hot air by means of suitable pipes into the cars when the same are being moved by a locomotive, and an injector to put hot air into the cars when the locomotive and cars are not moving. Then the pump stops, the injector is automatically put in mot-ion.

In these pipes the air coming from the pump G is heated, and from them the air is discharged by means of a pipe X, which communicates with the outer pipo J, and which may have coupled to it a pipe leading to a car to be heated, in the ordinary manner of connecting hot-air pipes. By means ot a vertical pipe K and a horizontal pipe II air is conducted from a cylinder A to the inner pipe J, and by means ot a suitable ail-chamber Il, attached to and communicating' with cylinder A and a pipe M, attached to the cylinder and to an air-force pump G, and communicating with them, the air taken by the pump G is delivered through the pipe X, and during its passage is heated in the pipes J K I. I
The pump G is of ordinary construction,
having four valves and two connections with pipe M. The pump is to have given to it the ordinary movement by means of crank I), which is attached to an ordinary yoke S, and the yoke is placed on an ordinary eccentric T, which is attached to the axle N of a locomotive-truck. The air is forced by the pump G into a chamber I., to equalize the pressure, and from the said chamber it enters the cylinder A, forcing the piston 5 up past the pipe II. Iy this movement the pistoirrod E', having a loose connection with a leverD, elevates the free end ot' said lever and closes a cock C in a steam-pipe F, to which it is at tached in the ordinary manner so long as air coming from the pump keeps the piston 5 elevated, as stated. The injector is idle, but as soon as the pump stops work the piston 5 will fall down to the position shown, the cock C in steam-pipe E will be opened and steam from the dome 6 will pass t'irough said pipe, enter the narrow passage I3 of pipe II, and pass on in the direction indicated by dart 8, Fig. 3, and air taken in at the top 7 ot' cylinder, by means of an opening E, will follow the steam into pipes K I .I in the ordinary manner of an injectors operation.
By the foregoing it will be seen that air will be put through the pipes K I .I so long as there is steam inthe boiler, notwithstamling the pump G is idle.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the pump G, air-chamber I., and pipe Bil, connecting said pump and air-chamber, cylinder A, open at its top and communicating withfchamber I., pipe II, communicating with cylinder A midway thereof, piston 5, operating in cylinder A and provided with an operating-rod E', injectorF, communicating with pipe II, the cock C, located in said injector E, lever D, connecting cock C with the piston 5 by means of rod E', and pipes K I J, communicating with pipe H, substantially as shown and described.
