The pressure is applied and Withdrawn alternately during each complete revolution of the crank, and the shoesole is thus compressed intermittently, to the end that any hard bunches in the leather may be Worked down to an even and uniform surface.
It is desirable that the sole should be subjected to the action of the shaping mechanism for a considerable time, (more or less,) depending upon the kind of Work, and for the purposes of convenience, as Well as economy in manufacture and use, several sets of mechanism-a half-dozen, more or less-may be united in one frame and run by one drivingshaft. The Workman,having adjusted a shoe in one set of mechanism, may turn his attention to placing a shoe on the next adjoining` set of mechanism, and so on he passes through the entire set and comes back to the rst shoe,
which by this time has been quite molded and is ready to be removed.
I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure* l. In a machine for shaping boot and shoe soles, a form, as B, for supporting` the shoe, a mold, as D, for shaping the sole, toggle-levers a a, means for operating them, a barrel b in rear of one of the levers, a spring inclosed in said barrel, and a plunger in connection with the lever a, fitting said barrel and adapted to be acted upon bythe spring tl1erein,substan tially as described.
2. In a boot and shoe sole shaping mechanism of substantially the construction described, and in combination, the described form for supporting the shoe, a mold, as D, for shaping the sole, a movable block for supporting the mold and adapted to permit a rocking movement, as described, a rod, as H, adapted to bear upon and press forward the block, said block and rod having their contiguous faces rounded, and connecting and operating mechanism, substantially as described.
