JAMES C. CONROY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE UNION WVATER METER COMPANY, OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CROSS FOR GAS MAINS OR PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,826, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed April 12, 1889. Serial No. 307,017- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. OONROY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crosses for Gas Mains or Pipes for Distribution of Gas, Water, Steam, &c., of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a speciio fication sufficiently full, clear, andexact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to provide a cross for the intersection of gas mains or distrilniting-pipes in which the flow of the gas through either of the respective pipes will not be deflected or interrupted by the flow in the other channel or cross-pipe by 2c reason of more rapid fioW in one than the other, while at the same time facility is afforded for the free passage of gas from one pipe to the other for equalizing the pressures in the system of distributing-mains. These objects I attain by a cross such as herein shown and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cross. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at line o c. Fig. 3 is a vertical sec- ,0 tion at line 10 to. Fig. 4: is a vertical section at line 00 m, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section at line 3 y.
The shell or body 0 of the cross is preferably of globular form, with pipe-connecting 3 5 branches 1, 2, 3, and 4 projecting therefrom at the respective sides. The passage A extends through the body in one direction, and the passage B extends through the body in crossdirection to the passage A. \Vithin the globular portion or center of the body these two passages are separated and defined by a partition or diaphragm D, the circumference of which joins the globular shell and divides the internal space, substantially as shown,
and which serves to deflect and direct the 5 currents orflow of gas through the respective passages A and IS, and prevents the flow in one passage from interfering with or obstructing the flow through the other passage or cross-channel. A11 opening or hole F is formed through the center partition D, so that equal pressure will be maintained within the two passages A and B.
The ends of the connecting branches can be fitted with bolting-flanges, socket-hubs, or screw-threads, or with any other required kind of fitting for matching and attaching the end of the gas mains or piping whereon the cross is to be used.
By the use of crosses such as above described 6: at the junction of mains in a gas-distributin g system a more uniform, constant, and regular fiow and pressure are insured throughout the district, as strong consumption and flow in any particular main will not tend to cut off or exhaust the flow in pipes or mains crossing the same.
I claim as my invention to be secured by Letters Patent- 1. A coupling for the junction of gas mains and pipes having a perforated partition in the interior thereof defining the respective passages froin the several connecting branches at the position where said passages cross each other, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The within-described cross for pipes or gas-distribu ting mains, consisting of the body or she'll O, provided with the crossed passages A and B, separated from each other by a partition D, and an opening F, connecting said So passages through the partition, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
fitness my hand this 5th day of April, A.
JAMES C CONROY.
