UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILE J. HERMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE SAFETY HATCH DOOR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HATCHWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,713, dated August 13, 1889. Application filed September 1, 1888. Serial No. 284,333. (No model.)
1' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE J. HERMAN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Self Closing Hatchways, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is an elevation illustrative of my invention. 'Fig. II is an enlarged detail perspective view.
My invention relates to a guide independent of and to be used in connection with the cam for opening the doors of an elevatorshaft, the officeof the guide being to receive the impact of the lever for opening the doors; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the floors of a building; 2, the hatchways; 3, the doors; 4, the cage; 5, a lifting-cam on top of the cage for opening the doors on the ascent of the cage, having a cushioning-spring 5; 6, a cam on the bottom of the cage for opening the doors on the descent of the cage; 7,-
a pivoted lever, against which the cam (5 strikes on the descent of the cage for opening the door beneath, and S a connection between the lever and the doors. This invention does not relate to any of these parts per se, but relates to a guide 10, connected to the cage, preferably close to the lifting-cam, and the office of which is to receive the free end of the lever as the cage ascends, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. I. It has been customary in this class of elevators to have the liftingcam 5 receive the impact of this lever as the cage ascends; but this necessitates the placing of the lifting-ca1n in a certain position relative to the lever, which position is not always convenient or best, and, moreover, the cam is liable at times to lift the lever and force it in the wrong direction. By providing the guide these difliculties are obviated and the .parts maybe made at a distance from the place of use, and can be put in place and in their respective places as the circumstances of, the case may require.
The guide will never force the lever in the Wrong direction, but will always force its free end in an outwardly and downwardly direction. 1 v
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a door, a lever, a connection between the lever and the door, a,
cage provided with a cam, and a guide on the cage independent of the cam for receiving the impact of the lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the door, a pivoted lever, a cage, a cam on the top of the cage for opening the door on the ascent of the elevator, and a guide 10, for receiving the impact ofv the said lever as the cage ascends, substantially as set forth.
EMILE J. HERMAN.
