SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,688, dated. August 13, 1889.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. BURGESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State vsheetmetal lock-cases; and the objects of my invention are simplicity and economy in construction.

.In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sheet-metal lock-case which embodies my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the plates of said lockcase on line 0c of Fig. 1, together with a side elevation of the key.

By the side of the key-hole 3 in each of the lock-plates A A, I swage two inwardly-projecting wards 4 4 for the key, forming a depression in one side of the metal and a corresponding projection upon the other side without puncturing the metal, said wards being: formed in the segment of a circle of which the axial bearin gs for the key in the key-hole are the center. By thus swaging the wards so that they constitute an integral part of the lock-plates which form the sides of the lock-case they are formed in an inexpensive manner, and changes in their position are easily made.

I am aware that a prior English patent shows a bridge formed separately from the lock-plates that form the sides of the case and set between them, and having wards for the key formed by puncturing the metal and turning up the edges from the perforation thus made. Such a lock is hereby disclaimed.

I claim as my invention- A sheet-metal lock-case having the projecting wards for the key swaged or struck up integral with a lock-plate that forms the side of the lock-case, said wards being formed by projections on one side of said plate and corresponding depressions upon the other side, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
