SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,518, dated August 6, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH MARRELToNs PORTER, ofMarietta, in the county of VVashington and State'of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stilts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in stilts; and it consists in the combination of the leg of the stilt, provided with suitable notches in its inner edge, a sliding loop or band which is placed around the leg, and in between the ends of which the block is pivoted at its lower corner, and a second loop or band which slides freely upon the leg, and which catches in a notch in the upper edge of the block, the block being provided on its inner side withprojections to catch in the recesses in the leg and adapted to be turned downward and outward when it is to be adjusted upon the leg, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide stilts in which the block can be readily adjusted upon the leg of the stilt, and thus enable the block to be-used at any desired height.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a stilt which embodies my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the block turned outward and downward for the purpose of being adjusted.

A represents the leg of the stilt, which is provided at regular intervals with the recesses B in its inner edge. Passing around three sides of these legs and adjustable thereon is the loop or band 0, in between the ends of which is pivoted the block D. This block has two projections G upon its inner edge, and which correspond to the recess B in the leg, as shown in Fig. 1. The recesses and projections being the same distance apart whenever the block is in position upon the leg, its two projections catch in two of the recesses and support the block in position. In

order to hold the upper end of the block so tightly against the edge of the leg, a second sliding loop or band H is placed upon the leg, and which is freely adjustable thereon. The inner end of this band or loop catches in a slot or recess 1, formed in the top of the block, as shown, and thus prevents the block from moving out of contact with the leg. This slot comes under the foot, and hence this loop can never become displaced while the stilt is in use, for the foot of the user of the stilt holds it rigidly in position. Fastened rigidly to the top of the block, at the inner corner, is the strap J, which passes over the top of the foot, and which is detachably fastened to the upper corner of the block, as shown. When it is desired to adjust the block vertically upon the leg, the strap must be first unfastened at its outer end, and then the loop is detached from the slot I, when the block can be turned downward and outward until the projection on its lower end becomes detached from the recess in the leg, and then the block and loop can be moved in either direction, according as it is desired to raise or lower the block.

By means of the construction here shown the boy is enabled to adjust the blocks at any distance desired from the ground and make the change from high to low in a moments time.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the leg provided with recesses, with the block provided with corresponding projections, a slide in which the lower end of the block is pivoted, and a holding device applied to the upper corner of the block, the block being adapted to turn upon its pivot at its lower end so as to disengage its projections from the recesses B, substantially as set forth.
