Description

(No Model.) I
I. S. KRIOK. DEVICE FOR GATGHING ANIMALS.
,No. 408,309. Patented Aug. 6, 1889.
M A5555 MM wzpd/f UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEIc IRWIN SOLOMONE KRICK, OF CONNEAUTVILLE, PENN SYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR CATCHI NG ANIMALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 408,309, dated August 6, 1889.
- Application filed June 9, 1888. Serial No. 276,658- (No model.)
To all whom, it near; concern:
Be it known that I, IRWIN SoLoMoNE KRICK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Oonneautville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Catching Animals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention. relates to that class of implements used for catching and holding vicious and wild cattle or horses; and it consists of a peculiarly-constructed snap-hook, which is operated by a cord or chain confined within the handle of the implement.
It further consists in the means for automatically opening and closing the snaphook, as hereinafter more fully described.
The object of my invention is to provide a safe and effective means for catching and controlling vicious and wild animals, and
when adjusted on the ring on the animals nose or to the halter about its head or neck sufficient flexibility is afforded to compensate for the motion of the animals head.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of same, showing operation in dotted lines; and Fig. 3, a detail view of the chain-link. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the snap-hook and chain on a larger scale.
Like letters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is the handle, which is constructed, preferably, of wood axially bored at a, and through said bore passes a rod B, having at one end a ring I; and at the other end an eye I), to which is attached a chain or rope I).
At either end of the handle A are rigidly secured ferrules O C, the former having its end projecting beyond the end of the stick to conceal the ring I) on the end of rod B. The ferrule O has its middle portion pressed in to form a tubular projection e, which is cone-shaped, and which receives the end of the snap-hook and admits of the passage of the chain or cord 7).
An internal cone 6 is formed in the ferrule C, which is designed to receive the conical end (Z of the snap-hook D. Attached to the outer end of the chain 1) is a snap-hook D, which is designed to be adjusted into the ring in the animals nose or upon the halter. The end (Z of the snap-hook D to which the chain 6 is attached is made conical, for the purpose hereinafter explained. Pivotally connected to the end cl of the snap-hook D is a tongue d, which prevents the displacement of the ring to which the snap-hook is designed to be attached. The tongue (1 is inclined on its face, as shown at c, so that when thesaid tongue is drawn into the coneshaped tubular projection c it engages with the face of said cone and the tongue is forced down, opening the hook and allowing the ring to be withdrawn therefrom.
A spring d is placed in a seat under the tongue cl, normally holding the tongue against the lip 61" of the body of the hook. Aleather strap E is attached to the portion of the handle A nearest the operator, which assists in the manipulation of the device.
The operation of my device is as follows: \Vhen it is desired to attach the snap-hook to the ring in an animals nose, or to a ring attached to some other convenient part of a halter, the rod B is withdrawn from the handle A until the inclined surface of the tongue on the snap-hook comes in contact with the inner walls of the cone-shaped tubular projection of the adjacent ferrule, the tongue being thus forced down and allowing the snaphook to be readily attached to the ring or halter. The operator by pulling the handle A toward himself causes the snap-hook to be withdrawn from the cone-shaped projection e, and the tongue is then put into place by the spring 6', which closes the snap-hook and secures the animal.
Having thus fully described my invention, I what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a device for catching and holding animals, consisting of an axially-bored handle provided with a centrally-apertured ferrule at each end, one of said ferrules having its opening inwardly tapered or cone-shaped, a rod longitudinally adjustable in said handle,a snap-hook provided With a spring-actuated pivot-tongue adapted to enter the cone-shaped opening in said ferrule, and a flexible connection between said snap-hook and the adjustable rod,
substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device forcatching and holding animals, the combination, with the handle A, axially bored at a and provided With the .ferrules 0 O, the ferrule 0 having the tapered or cone-shaped tubular projection e, and the rod B, longitudinally adjustable in said handle, of the snap-hook D, normally closed by v the spring 01, and having its upper edge beveled to adapt it to the said cone-shaped I 5 tubular projection e of the ferrule O, and thecord'or chain 1), connecting said snaphook and the rod B, substantially as shown and described.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 20 presence of two Witnesses.
IRWIN SOLOMONE KRIOK.
