Description
PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB \V. XVHEATLEY, OF POOOMOKE CITY, MARYLAND.
BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed May 29, 1889.
Patent No. 408,277, dated August 6, 1889..
Serial No. 312,627. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB W. WHEATLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocomoke City, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Barrel, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in barrels.
The object of the present invention is to produce a barrel composed of sections orbaskets which are capable of being readily separat-ed in order to be nest-ed together and packed in a small compass for shipment or storage, and whiclnwhen joined together, will combine all the advantages of a fruit-basket and a barrel.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the lower section or basket, which is composed of staves a, that are either arranged close together or a slight distance apart to permit ventilation, and are secured at their lower ends around a solid bottom B, which forms the lower head of the barrel, by a hoop O. The staves a are strengthened and secured together intermediate of their ends by a hoop O. The upper ends of the staves a are secured between the hoops D and D, arranged, respectively, on the outside and inside of the staves. The inner hoop D projects a little beyond the ends of the staves, formingwith the ends a rabbetthatis adapted to receive a corresponding rabbet of the upper section A. The hoop D is arranged around the outside of the section or basket A, and has its upper edge flush with the ends of the staves. The upper section A is composed of staves o, and is provided with removable bottom E, which forms the upper head or cover of the barrel. The bottom E consists of a solid disk of wood, provided around its edge with a hoop E, that projects below and fits in a rabbet a, formed at the ends of the staves a by the hoops F and F, between which the staves are held, the inner hoop F projecting above the ends and forming the said rabbet a. The bottom E is fastened in place by sheet-metal plates G, that are nailed or similarly secured to the hoops E and F. The other ends of the staves a are secured together between the hoops H and H, similarly to the corresponding ends of the staves of the section A, with the exception that the inner hoop H is arranged a short distance from the ends to allow for the lapping of the hoop D.
The barrel is formed by placing the upper ends of the sections or baskets together, the rabbets formed by the hoop D and H making a neat and tight joint, and then securing them together by the sheet-metal plates G, which are nailed or otherwise fastened to the hoops D and H. The barrel is then filled, and the bottom E, which forms the upper head or cover of the barrel, is put in place, as described. WVhen it is desired to send the merchandise away in smaller quantities, each section may be packed and sent separately.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, oper ation, and advantages of the improved barrel will readily be seen.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters llatent, 1s
1. A barrel composed of two sections or baskets A and A, the section A having its staves secured between the hoops D and D, the hoops D projecting beyond the ends of the staves, and the section A provided with the hoops H and H, the hoop H being arranged a short distance within the ends of the staves, whereby, when the sections are brought together, the hoop D will lap over the joint at the inside of the barrel, and the metal plates securing the sections together, substantially as described.
2. A barrelcoinposed of the section or basket A, having a stationary bottom and provided with the hoops D and D, the latter proj ecting beyond the staves and the former bein g arranged flush with their upper ends, and
' the section 0r basket A, having a-removable In testimony that I claim the foregoing as bottom forming the upper head or cover of my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 10 the barrel and provided with the hoops H presence of two witnesses.
and H, the former being flush with the upper ends of the staves and the latter being JACOB WV. WHEATLEY.
arranged a short distance Within their ends, -Witnesses: said sections being secured together by the G. EDGAR SOHOOLFIELD, metal plates G, substantially as described. CATHELL I. HI'TOH.
