SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,168, dated July 30, 1889.

To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DUBROW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to improvements in gasoline sad-irons, having for its object to obviate the pumping of air to aid the feeding of the liquid for combustion, this being effected herein by the action of atmospheric i 5 air-pressure after the impartation of the initial pressure; and to these ends the nature of the invention consists of the general organization and disposition of parts of the iron, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved sad-iron, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ, as usual, a sad-iron A, having a combustion-chamber, in the bottom of which is the burner B, having in its sides, at the bottom edges, series of j eteopenings. The burner B has one end formed into a tube a, which is inclined or extended upward out through the rear wall or end of the sad-iron. In the same wall of the sad-iron A is a series of air-inlets or draft-openings l) b to promote combustion.
C is the liquid or gasoline holder or tank, which is provided in its top or upper surface with a short air-inlet tube d, having a valve, e. The tank or holder has a pipe f leading or ext-ending from its bottom inwardly toward the sad-iron a short distance. The pipe f has cast with one section f2 thereof a solid extension f', which forms one end of the handle D. The section f2 of the pipe f is passed at its lower end through the removable top plate or cover E of the sad-iron and beneath it, and is fastened thereto, said arm extending out beyond one end or edge of said top plate or cover and also beyond the iron. Ilere the arm f2 is provided with a downwardly and outwardly. inclined extension f3, which is joined at its lower end with a similar but oppositely-inclined portion or arm f4. At the angle thus formed between the portions or arms f3 f4 is a passage or aperture g, for the discharge of the gasoline or liquid into and for filling the burner B through the tube a. The tube a of the burner B stands about in alignment with the direction of discharge of the outlet aperture or passage g of the pipe f. The arm f4 of the pipef is provided with a screw-plug valve 7L, which closes the discharge passage or aperture g, and which is operated by a thumb or finger piece or disklike knob 7L.
In supplying liquid fuel to the burner B the valve or cock e of the holder or tank-tube (l is opened and air forced into said tank or holder, it may be, by blowing into said tube, the tank or holder having previously been supplied with the liquid or gasoline. The screw-plug valve 7i is also operated so as to remove it from, and thus permit of the dis- 7o charge through, the aperture or passage g, whence it enters the tube a of the burner B.
From the foregoing it will be seen that no pumping operation is necessary to eifect the feeding or supply of the liquid or gasoline to the burner, it only being required, as above stated, to effect this operation by subjecting the contents of the tank or holder to an initial air-blast, the subsequent feeding operation of the liquid or gasoline to the lamp or burner being automatically conducted by atmospheric air-pressure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The sad-iron having its supply tank or holder connected thereto by a pipe passing through the top of the iron, and having an arm within the iron extending out beyond one end or edge of the iron and outward and down? ward, and uniting at its lower end with an upward and outward inclined arm having a plug-valve closing a jet-opening in its lower end, and the burner having an upward and outward inclined tube, the upper end of which stands opposite and slightly away from the jet-opening of said latter pipe-arm, substantially as set forth.
