Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. MERSMAN, OF LA GRANGE, INDIANA.
FOLDING WASH-BENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,123, dated .T uly 30, 1889.
Application filed DeCSIlllJel 21, 1883. Serial No. 294,314. (N0 DlOdel.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES B. MERSMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Grange, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding lVash- Benches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, is a side view, and shows it folded up. Fig. 2 is a top view opened out. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, the top portion being in side elevation. Fig. e is a detail and an end view. Fig. 5 is a detail and a vertical section.
This invention has relation to folding wringer and wash benches; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates two vertical side bars, parallel to each other and notched vertically in their upper ends to receive the lower portion of the vertical attachment board B for the wringing-machine, which, when in use, is designed to be clamped thereto. This board is secured to the rside uprights A, and forms a brace therefor. A second transverse brace is applied below said board between said uprights, as at C.
The wringer-attachment board is provided with the horizontal cover-joint ribs D and with the bracket-hinge plates E, which ext-end beyond said ribs, and to which the drip-boards F are pivoted, as shown. The upper corners of the side uprights A extend outward beyond the plane of the ribs, and the drip boards have their pivot-axis between said ribs and corners, so that when said boards are turned down in an inclined position their inner edges will bear up against the ribs and form a tight Joint; and if any undue press- .nre should be applied to said boards it would are turned up in the vertical plane, their p0n are beveled at the upper and inner edges and iirmlysecured to said standard by screws at a and by screws o, passing through the horizontal bracket-bars II, which extend along the joint portions of the uprights A and the legs G. These bracket-bars II have eXtensions c beyond said legs, which are perforated for the passage of a pivotround I, which forms the inner transverse brace of the par allel bars J of the bench-wing WV. These bars are also braced by a transverse rod at K, and by a round L at their outer ends, to which is pivoted the outer leg-frame M, having the upright legs m, across the upper portion of which is secured the transverse brace N, having the stop-extensions n, as shown. Between the parallel legs of the main standard are pivoted the tie-bars P, which extend outward and are pivoted at their outer ends to the transverse bars o, which embrace the lower ends of the leg-frame M.
Vhen not in use, the bench-win gs, with their leg-frames, are folded upward and inward and rest against the upper part of the central standard, the drip-boards being also folded upward, so that the center of gravity of each bench-wing and its attachments lies within the axis of the pivots, which supports their weight. Therefore these wings will remain in folded position without falling.
Ihen folded, the bench can be put away in a corner, occupying but little room. Vhen unfolded for use, it will be found strong and durable and well braced to sustain the weight of the tubs and wringer.
Having described this invention, what I clai1n,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The standard provided with a vertical wringer-attachment board B, having' the cover-joint ribs D,the extended hinge-brackets, and the drip-boards F, pivoted to said brackets, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MERSMAN. lVitnesses:
C. L. BOTHWELL, A. H. KAUEFMAN.
