To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME A. CROSS, of Fultonville, Montgomery county, New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hay-Carriers, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in haycarriers; and the invention consists of a hay-carrier with its several parts constructed and combined in the manner herein particularly described, shown, and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation,partly in section, of the carrier mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan of the carrier mechanism; Fig. 3, a section in the plane w m, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a side elevation of carriage and pivoted bracket; Fig. 5, a plan of pivoted bracket.

This invention relates particularly to that class of hay-carriers constructed so as to perinit the load to travel freely to the right or to the left of a given position.
The track A of my carrier may be substantially the same as the track used for any similar contrivance. Resting on this track are flanged trolley-wheels B. These wheels are suit bly j ournaled to the carrier-frame 0. Also journaled to this frame, but below the wheels B, are grooved pulleywheels D D. The frame 0 is provided with lugs a, which form bearings for a pivot-bar l), and this pivot-bar unites and supports the two jaws of a latch E. Also to these lugs a are pivoted pawls 13, each having a set-screw r and spring 8.
Surrounding the pivot-bar Z) of the latch E is a spiral spring 0, with uncoiled ends, forming arms (I, that rest against the inner faces of the latch E, so that when the upper legs 6 of the latch are brought together by compression the sides of the lower part f of the latch will be spread apart, and vice versa. Each jaw of the latch, at or near the lower end f of the same, is provided with a lug g. Also fixed to the track A and spanning the same is a bracket h, and to the bow of this bracket is secured a double catch F. This catch is of the form shown in Fig. 2-that is, having flaring jaws k, with inclined edges, throats Z, shoulders 'm, and a clearway n.
Passing over the grooved pulley-wheels D D isa rope G, and rove into the bighttof this rope is a traveling pulley H. This pulley has in each side of its shell an opening Z, and to the lower part of the shell is fixed a clevis 10. In the rope G, and on the right and left hand sides, respectively, of the pulley H, are formed ovoid enlargements y.
The rope G, extending on either side of the pulleys D D, passes around pulleys J J, and thence around pulleys K K, the two lastnamed pulleys being fixed to the floor of the barn or elsewhere by screw-bolts a u and clevises 2 2. The rope, after passing around the pulleys K K, has one or the other of its free ends 3, as may be desired, hitched to a horse or attached to a Windlass for the purpose of obtaining the necessary power to operate the carrier.
Now when my hay-carrier is constructed substantially as hereinbefore described it is operated in this wise: The load or hay fork, as shown in the drawings, by means of the clevis w, is attached to the traveling block H, the block for that purpose being on the floor or wagon containing the hay or load to be elevated; and when the block H is in this lowered position the legs 6 of the latch E are engaged with the shoulders m on one side or the other of the double catch F, as the case may be, and this engagement of the latch E locks the carriage O to the catch F, and that catch being fixed to the bracket h, which spans the track, as described; the frame 0 of the carrier is held firmly in position until the traveling block H, with its load is, by the power applied to the free end of the rope G, elevated till the openings 2) in the shell of the pulley H pass between the sides of the lower part f of the latch E, when the shell of the pulley H, bearing against the lugs g on this lower part of the latch, forces outward the sides of the lower part f of the latch and inward the legs 6 thereof until these legs are disengaged from the shoulders m ofthe catch F, when the spring 0 causes the sides of the lower part f of the latch to close upon the shell of the action of the springs 3.

Then, the latch E being disengaged from the catch F, the frame C, with its suspended load of hay, is free to travel, by means of its trol ley-wheels B, along the track A to the position desired for unloading the carrier. The traveling of the carrier on its track is caused by the horse or other power applied to the free end 3 of the rope G, and as the carrier travels the ends of the legs 6 of the latch E may pass on one side or the other of the catch F through the clearway n of that catch,
as may be desired. As is obvious, if the rope G were free at all times to render around the pulleys, the power applied to the rope would not move the carrier on its track. Therefore the enlargements y are provided at such places on the rope G as will bring these enlargements in contact with the pawls 19,1001:-

From the foregoing it will be seen that my carrier may readily be caused to travel to the right or left with its load along its track, it being necessary only to apply the power for this purpose to either of the free ends of the rope G, passed'around one or the other of the fixed pulleys K K. WVhen thepower is applied to one of the free ends of the rope, the other free end may be made fast to its pulley K, and that pulley, by backing out its bolt from its clevis 2, be disconnected from its screw-bolt u, so that the disconnected pulley may be drawn upward as the carriage travels, and so act as a counter-weight to take in the slack and keep taut the rope G, preventing loss of power.
When it is desirable to have several convenient points at which the hoisting of the load to the carrier may take place,I fix to the track A, or to the rafters, or to some other convenient objects, a number of brackets h, and pivot to them the catch F instead of fixing that catch immovably in place. Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a'hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage consisting of the frame 0, supported by trolley-wheels resting on the track A, the pulley-wheels D D, and the latch E, having the legs e e, extending above the rest of the carriage, and also having the lower parts ff, the catch F, with inclined edges k 70, throat Z, and shoulders m m, supported above the track, the rope G, and the traveling pulley H, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage consisting of the frame 0, supported by trolley-wheels resting on the track A, the
pulley-wheels D D., and the latch E, composed of the two jaws, the spring, and the pivot-bar 1), whereby the jaws are united and secured to the frame 0, said jaws having the legs 6 6, extending above the rest of the carriage, and the lower parts f f, the catch F, with inclined edges 7c, throat Z, and shoulders m m, located above the track, the rope G, and the traveling pulley H, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage consisting of the frame 0, trolleywheels, pulley-wheels D D, and latch E, having the legs e 6, extending above the rest of the carriage, and the lower parts f f, the rope G, the traveling pulley H, and the catch F, with inclined edges 7c 70, throat Z, and shoulders m 'm, pivoted to a support above the track, and in one posit-ion engaging with the latch E and in another position allowing the carriage to pass freely by it, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage having the frame 0, pulley-wheels D D, and pawls p p, and the rope G, .having the enlargements y y, constructed and operating substantially as described.
5. In a hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage consisting of the frame 0, having the pawls p p, with stops 7' r and springs s s, the trolley-wheels, the pulley-wheels D D, and the latch E, having the legs e e, extending above the rest of the carriage, and the lower part f f, the catch F, with inclined edges 70 7c, throat Z, and shoulders m m, located above the track, the rope G, having the enlargements 1 y, and the traveling pulley H, constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
6. In a hay-carrier, the combination of the carriage provided with pulley-wheels D D,
the rope G, having the enlargements 1 y, the traveling pulley H, and the catch F above the track, the frame 0 of the carriage being constructed with lugs a a, to which are pivotecl the pawls p p, having stops 4" 0" and springs s s, and which also form bearings for the pivot-bar Z) of the latch E, the legs 6 e of which extend above the rest of the carriage and engage with the catch F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
