Description
7 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL GALLAND, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVED LINIMENT FOR RHEUMATISM, 86C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,686, dated November 24, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GALLAND, of Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented or discovered a new and useful composition of matter, which I denominate Rheumatic Linimentfi and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description of the mode of compounding and using the said composition.
The object of this invention or discovery is the production of an efiicieut and valuable standard remedy for rheumatic affectionsp and the nature thereof relates to the combination of the ingredients forming said composition in certain relative proportions, as follows: eight (8) ounces of alcohol, one (1) ounce laud-anum,
two (2) ounces pulverized capsicum, one (1) ounce oil camphor, one-half (go-ounce oil sassafras, one-half (5) ounce oil cedar. The mass should be shaken well together and allowed to stand for atleast two hours before using. When not required for immediate use it is desirable that the mass should be filtered; but such process is not material to the beneficial effects of the said composition.
When it may be desired to use the compound or liniment the parts affected by rheumatic pains should be first bathed in warm water, so'
as to remove all'foreign matter from the skin, and to render the same, as far as possible, capable of cutaneous absorption. The liniment may then be applied in small quantities, varying from one-fourth of an ounce to an ounce, according'to the extent of the parts affected. The liniment should be well rubbed in with the hand or a suitable woolen cloth, after which the-part or parts affected should be wrapped in flannel until the pain is removed, excepting only the time required for subsequent applications of the liniment.
Thorough and careful experiments have de monstrated that the said liniment may be successfully employed as a remedy for sprains and for swellings and pains arising from the straining of muscles and tendons, as well as for rheumatic difficulties in all their various forms.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming the employment of the within-named ingredients of said liniment as taken separately and singly; butI believe the within-described combination of the ingredients named in the relative manner specified to be new. Therefore What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described composition or rheumatic liniment, compounded of the ingredients in the relative proportions, quantities, and man-. ner set forth and specified, for the purposes named, as a new article of manufacture and trade.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of September, 1863.
SAMUEL GALLAND. Witnesses HERRM. BoUKE, M. MCOORD.
