Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH CAMPBELL, CF NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPFtovEMENT IN I UBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,673. dated November 24, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HUGH CAMPBELL, of Newtown, in the county of Fairiield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grease-Cups; and I do herebydeclarethat thefollowingisafulhclear, and exact description of' the saine, referente being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specitication, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon.
[n lubricating the cylinders ot' steam engines it has Ahitherto been necessary in lowpressure engines to open the grease-cock when it is on the side of the piston open to the exhaust, so that the pressure ot' the extereal atmosphere would force the oil or melted tallow to the inside ot the cylinder. In rapidly-working engines-such as are usually attached to screwpropellers-there is too little time to admit the grease in this manner,.as the cock must be closed before the steam is admitted to that end ot' the cylinder for the returnstroke, orelse the grease would be blown from the cnp and into the engine-room. It is also exceedingly objectionable, that in admitting the grease into the exhaust end of' the cylinder a large portion is carried with the exhaust intothe condenser without even coming in contact with the internal surface of the cylinder` and is therefore entirely lost. ln high-pressure engines, where, even on the exhaust side, the pressure is always greater than that ot' the atmosphere, it has been necessary to furnish the cylinder with a greasecup fitted with two cocks, so arranged that it may be Iilled with the lower one closed to prevent the escape oi' steam, and emptied into the cylinder by closing the upper cork and opening the lower one, so that it may gad ually find its way from the cup to the eyl-.
inder. As this operation is necessarily a slow one, and there is no way with the ordinary appliances of hastening it. there is ot'ten much damage done for the want ot' some method ot' quicklyT supplying a sufficient amount of 1ubricatin g material.
rlhe object ot' my invention is to force the oil or tallow to the interior ofthe cylinder by the pressure of' the steam used for working the engine; and it consists in ttting the oilgup With a steam-tight cover that may be easily removed, and in connecting the cup with the steam-pipe of the engine above `its connection with tht steam chest.
To enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and opera-tion, with reference to the drawing.
The grease-cup a. is secured to the cylinder ot'the engine, and is furnished with a cock, b, in the usual manner. Itis fitted with the steamtight cover c, which is screwed on by means of' the handle d. The small steam-pipe e is also fitted with a cock, and connects the greasecup with the steam-pipe. ofthe engine, (represented at j',) above the stop-valve g. When the cnp a has been filled with oil or tallow, and the cover c screwed tightly in its place, the opening of' the cock in the steam-pipe e causes the grease to be forced from the'cup to the cylinder immediately on opening the cock bein the lower part of the cup. As the piston moves from the steam, it is manifest that the pressure of steam within the cylinder is not so great as that in the steam-pipe or boiler; hence the connection of the grease-cup to either ofthe latter, and the consequent exposure of the grease to a pressure exceeding that within the cylinder, insures its speedy transf'er from the cup. No separate vessel need be used for melting tallow in connection with this grease-cup, as the rough tallow may be placed in the cup and allowed to melt there, in readiness for instant use when it may bev required.
The oil-pipe may be connected with a bearing or other portion of machinery that is not easily accessible with an ordinary oil-can, in such a manner that it may be lubricated from the engine-room, it' desired, or any other convenient place, by means of' the pressure ot' the steam.
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A grease or tallow cup fitted with a movable cover and a steam-pipe, and constructed and arranged substantially in the manner described, f'or the purpose specified.
HUGH CAMPBELL.
