Description
NTTEE STATES PATENT OEETCE.
A. W. STREETER, OF SHELBURNE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPHOVEDBRACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 410,652, dated November 17, 1863.
To @ZZ whom z'mcry concern.-
Be it known that I, A. W. STREETER, of Shelburne Falls, inthe county of Franklin and Stare ot lilassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpenters Braces or BitStoeks; and Ido hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact desciiption ot' the same, reference being' had to the accomiainyingdrawing, making' a part of' this speciiication, said drawing', being' a vieu7 of a brace or bir stock with my improvement applied to it and shown in section.
rlhis invention relates to an improvement in the attaching' ot' the knob to the end ot' the brace or bit-stock.
The object ot' the invention is to obviate the dit'iiculty attending' the Wear of the Working' parisin the ordinary brace or bit-stock, and at the same time reduce they cost in the construction of said part ot' the brace or bit-stock.
To enable those skillid in the art to fully understand and construct mj invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the brace or bit-stock, Which is constructed of-metal, bent or curved in the usual t'orm and provided at the center ot' its crank portion with a wooden knob, B, for the purpose ot' turning' it. (l is the knob at the end ot' the `)race or bit-stock. This knob is ot" Wood or any suit-able material, and it is secured on a metal socket, D, which is fitted on the end ofthe brace or bitstock. The end of the brace or bitstock A which is fitted in the socket D is turned down so as to leave a stem or shank, a, and a shoulder, b, and the socket D is provided internally with l an opening of tWo different diameters, so as to leave a ledge or shoulder to bear or rest against the shoulder b on the brace or bitstock. The shoulder b is near lthe end of the brace or bit stock, and hence a long bearing is given the socket D on the brace or bitstock, and all lateral Wear and strain are avoided. The end of' the stem or shank a is riveted on the end of the socket D, and the knob G is screwed down on the socket D about one-halt'ot'its length, the screw LX beingiormed on the socket about that distance.
By this invention a good bearing-surface is obtained for the socket D, and the brace or bit-stock will not be injured by Wear in rotating' the same, as is the case with the braces or bit-stocks of this kind as hitherto arranged, tor in my improvement the greater portion ot' the brace or bit-stock which Works in the socket D is not diminished in diameter, and the brace or bit-stock may be subjected to considerable lateral strain Without injury from wearer without being liable to be bent or otherwise injured.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the knob C and socket D with their screws ac, for the purpose vof uniting saio knob and socket to each other and'to the bit-stock A, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
A. W. STREETER. Witnesses: t
