Description

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MADGETT, OFv BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED BOOT-CRIMPING DEVICE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40.634, (lated November 17, 1863.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MADGETT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boot-Crimping Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andthe single lever boot-crimping machine, which consists of xed pressure-plates and a movable crimping-plate.
My invention consists in arranging the pressure-plates and the crimping-plate in such a manner that both may be moved simultaneously in opposite directions, whereby it is believed that a more efficient device is obtained for the purpose than those previously devised.
A represents a frame, which may be of castiron and secured permanentlyY to any proper fixture. This frame is composed of a horizontal plate, a, supported at its ends by standards b b ot' any suitable form. To one of the standards b there is connected, by a hinge, c, a bar, B, having two upright plates, C C', connected to it by bolts d, which pass through oblong slots e in the bar B, and admit ot' a lateral adjustment of said plates toward and from each other, said adjustment being accomplished by means of a screw, D. This arrangement is peculiarly similar to many of the ordinary crimping-machines in use, except the bar. B. which in the old machines is fixed.
E represents a crimping-plate, which may be of the usual form and provided with the usual clamp and screw, F, for drawing and securing the boot-front (represented by dotted lines in Fig. 1) on the crimping-plate E. This crimping-plate is connected at one end to the standard b by a joint-,ji and the opposite end is connected by a link, g, to a lever, G, which has its fulcrum h on the top ot' the standard b', the link g being connected to the outer end ot' the lever G, and the inner end ot' the latter being underneath the free or disengaged end of the bar B, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The lever G may have a socket. i. at its outer part to` receive a bar or handle, j, to aitord additional leverage-power.
From the above description it will be seen that when the bar or handle j is lowered the bar B, and consequently the plates G Of, will be raised by the action of the inner end of the lever G against the free end ot bar B, and the plate E lowered by the action of the link g, and the boot-front will consequently be forced and pressed between the plates (l C', which are adjusted so as to press sufficiently hard against the boot-front and effectually crimp and smooth the same on the plate E. By this arrangement the crimping will be 'accomplished far more expeditiously than by the ordinary machine, in which the crimping-plate E is only moved.
l do not claim the pressure-plates C C', nor the crimping-plate E, for they are in common use; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y The crimping-plate E, in combination with the pressure-plates C C', attached to the hin ged har B, the above parts being arranged with the lever G and link g, or their equivalent, to operate as and for the purpose herein set forth.
THOMAS MADGETT.
