F. D. F. MULLER. AIR TIGHT CHAMBER IN VESSELS.
No. 405,792. Patented June 25, 1889'.
INVENTOH WITNESSES A TTOR/VEU mlllllgqfl lfqf frl illllll N. PETKRS. Phowmho hur. Waihmgiom D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH D. F. MULLER, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
AIR-TIGHT CHAMBER lN VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 405,792, dated June 25, 1889. Application filed October 2,1888. Serial No. 236,988. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH D/F. MiiL- LER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vessels, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful attachments to marine vessels for the purpose of rendering them unsinkable in case of collision, explosion, or any like mishap.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a vessel provided with my improvements, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the vessel provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, parts being broken out and the under side of the different decks being shown. Fig. t is a detail sectional view showing the aircocks for the tanks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The ceilings A, which are secured to the decks B of the vessel 0 in the usual manner, are composed of cork sheets or plates from one to two inches in thickness, said cork sheets serving for the purpose of increasing the buoyancy of the ship and to assist in floating the same in case it springs a leak or in case it in any other way becomes partially filled with water. To the under sides of the decks I secure, by means of suitable fastening-strips or other suitable device, sheet-metal air and water tight tanks 'D, which nearly cover the entire ceiling. The said air-tanks are made fiat,
so as to reduce the clear space between the decks as little as possible. In order to protect said tanks froin the efiects of entering shot or shell, V-shaped or similar strong deflecting-plates E are secured to the inner surface of the sides of the hull along each side of the decks. In the saloon decks and cabins, which would be disfigured by the flatair-t-anks D, the cornices F are made hollow and constructed of sheet metal, so that they serve as air-tanks for increasing the buoyancy of the ship. The said cornices are enlarged, so as to increase their air-storing capacity. The center-pieces H are also made hollow and air and water tight, so as to serve as air-tanks.
On men-of-war the shock caused by the firing of cannon might compress and rupture the air-tanks, and to avoid this said tanks are provided with air-pipes M, having cocks N, which can be opened while firing, so that the air compressed by the shocks can escape from the tanks.
The floors on the deck-beams are made of wood or metal in the usual manner. In case the ship springs a leak or collides with another and the water enters, the air contained in the several air-tanks, and also the cork plates, will have sufficient carrying-power to keep the ship afloat, and Will prevent its sinking.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A marine vessel provided with air-tight tanks located at the corners and ceilings of the cabins and saloons and shaped to form cornices and center-pieces, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a marine vessel, of flat air-tight tanks secured to the under sides of the decks and V-shaped deflectingplates secured to the hull of the vessel along the edges of the decks and partially covering said tanks, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIED, D. F. MULLER.
