GEARING Patented June 25, 1889 I an (am-to 2a. 7%

ARZA M. BENSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
GEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,? 59, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed December 29, 1888. Serial No. 294,958. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARZA M. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the follow ing is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention more particularly relates to improvements in that class of gearing adapted to be operated without backlash; and the improvements consist in the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a central sectional view through a gear and its connecting-web. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the connecting-gears. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cutter-heads, certain parts of the gear also being shown.
Gears A A, preferably made as steel castings with out teeth, are respectively secured to shafts a a, which said latter shaft is connected up to any suitable driving-power, while gearA is moved solely by contact with gear A. Each said gear is cast with web 0, located to one side of the longitudinal center of the gear-teeth, and with hub 0', also formed to one side of said center line. I am thus enabled to journal the shafts more closely to said webs than as though the hubs projected on both sides of the center of the gear.
The shafts a (1, are located slightly angular to each other, in order to give the cutterknives the proper inclination toward each other to form the bilge of the stave. This necessitates 1n akin g the gears of slightly-greater diameter on one edge (Z of their periphery than on the opposite edge (1.
Friction-wheelE is a casting provided with hub e and has the plain-faced periphery e. The hub of said web friction-whecl is driven over the gear-hub until the rim of the friction-wheel is in engagement with the side of the gear-teeth, the periphery of said web friction-wheel extending to the pitch-line of the teeth, leaving the outer half of the teeth exposed beyond the periphery of said friction-wheel. Set-screw fsecures the frictionwheel and gear-hubs together.
I preferably secure the friction-wheel on the large side of the gear-wheels; but may 10- cate it 011 either or both sides of the same. The peripheries e of the friction-wheels are respectively smooth-faced and engage with each other. The extremities g of the cutterheads interfit with the spaces g of the complementary heads as they both revolve.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings set forth in detail mechanism an embodiment of my invention. Change may be made therein, provided the principles of construction respectively recited in the following claims are employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the two rotary shafts a a, located angularly to each other, and the two gears A A, each of greater diameter at one peripheral edge than at the other, and having hubs c c, of the two platesides of the gears which are of greatest diameter, each said plate-disk having its periphery in lateral engagement with the ends of the teeth of its respective gear, while its portion intermediate of its center and periphery is free from said gear, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with two rotary shafts a a, located angularly to each other, and the two gears A A, each of greaterdiameter at one peripheral edge than at the other, and formed with a web located nearer the larger diametrical side, and having hubs c c, projecting only from said larger diametrical side of the gears, of the two plate-disks E E, respectively, having hubse e, mounted on said gear-hubs c 0, next to the sides of the gears which are of greatest diameter, and the fastening device f, each said plate-disk being secured by said hub and fastening means and having its periphery in lateral contact with the ends of the teeth of its respective gear, whileits body portion is free from the gear-web, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing to be my invention I have hereunto setmyhand this 26th day of December, A. D. 1888.
