To all whom it may concern:

Bait known that I, VoLNEr E. ltrsco,.of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Machines for Tanning Hides; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying in which-- I Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section. p

The object of my invention is to efiect a thorough handling of the hides, and a pertest tanning of the same with a rotary cylinder revolved yery slowly -within a tanninliqnor vat. Rotating cylindrical devices for this purpose hare been' used, and in many instances openings have been formed in the circumference to allow the tannin. liquor to flow from the rat. into and out of the cylinder in which the hides are placcd.- The handling of hides by such cylinder devices has never been very satisfactory, onaccount'of atendency of the hides .to roll together'in abulk or heap, so as-to prevent a thorough penetration-through every part-thereof, f

also on account of the irregularity and fastness with which the. c \linder operates; To remedy-these objections, a multiplication-jot gear-wheels has been resorted to,.and it maybe that pins and stretchers have been placed '2 on the insidcin diiiercnt'ways; but in no instance, to my knowledge, has that perfection which is sodesirable been attained; I 1 have found irom practical use of a. ma-
