Description

' drawings, forming, part of this'specitication,
To all whom it may concern:
Bait known that I, VoLNEr E. ltrsco,.of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Machines for Tanning Hides; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying in which-- I Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section. p
The red lines X X indicate the points. where the sections are taken.
The object of my invention is to efiect a thorough handling of the hides, and a pertest tanning of the same with a rotary cylinder revolved yery slowly -within a tanninliqnor vat. Rotating cylindrical devices for this purpose hare been' used, and in many instances openings have been formed in the circumference to allow the tannin. liquor to flow from the rat. into and out of the cylinder in which the hides are placcd.- The handling of hides by such cylinder devices has never been very satisfactory, onaccount'of atendency of the hides .to roll together'in abulk or heap, so as-to prevent a thorough penetration-through every part-thereof, f
also on account of the irregularity and fastness with which the. c \linder operates; To remedy-these objections, a multiplication-jot gear-wheels has been resorted to,.and it maybe that pins and stretchers have been placed '2 on the insidcin diiiercnt'ways; but in no instance, to my knowledge, has that perfection which is sodesirable been attained; I 1 have found irom practical use of a. ma-
- chine such as I have represented in my dra-wi'ug's, and shall now proceed to describe, that i it is an improvement to work the cylinder with whatis .known as wor'mgear, as such meansinsurc the mostregnlar and a. very slow motion, and also that; it is an iinprovement to set the hooksfor pins, nhich carry 5 the hides around as the cylinder revolves,
11- diagonal or spiral lines, or so that: they l would he intersected by a zigzaglino runnin ironiend to end of the cylinder.

The-cylinder may be made of-stayes so puttogether that at suitable intervals openings bhshall be formed in the cylinder, as represented. 0n the inside of the cylinder bent pins-or curved'hook-s c c are -pYacedso' as to run spirally or diagonally around the interior of the cylinder or be intersected by a zigzag line running from endtoend of the cylinder, as illustrated in red lines,

The hides are introduced into the cylinder. through hinged doors a a, and in their de-j.
scent into the cylinder they are caught by the books or curved pins in such a manner as to he exposed very perfectly to-the tan" nin liquor which flows through the openings into and out of the cylinder. The cylinder through the aid of the hooks or curved pins in such a manner that they are raised out of the hides or skins (at every part) of the I itannin liquor. It will he, understood that the rat. is iilled'up to the journals of the cy y inder with ooze or tannin liquor, and that the cylinder will he suhmergediuto tlieliqn'or to an extentahout-equal to half its diame- :1 ter. The slow motion gives the hides, as
they are being lifted, time enough to drip before they are again dropped into the liquor; but the main design of it. is. to keep them long enough immersed to allow the tannin Q to t, u on them. Thedropping back of the" hides into the liquor is insured by the shape of the dull-pointed pins or"hooks,*thecurvel in them being just sutlicientto insures hold in its revolutions handles or lifts the hides fipo n the-m dur ingithe 'lifting, but not te gi're- 'W-hat I chimes-1h yentihen-z slipping down after they are lifted.
