J. W. PARRISH. GHURN.
Nirnn STATES .IOllN IV. PARRISII, OF MILTON, TEST VIR HNIA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,591, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed December 17, 1888. Serial No. 293,382. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. PARRISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milton, in the county of Cabell and State of XVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is aside elevation of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a lperspective view of the compound dasher with its frame and operating mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line o; a; in Fig. l.
Likeletters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the iignres.
This invention relates to churns of that class in which the dasher hasacombined vertical and rotary reciprocating motion. within a fixed churn-body or cream-reeeptacle; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the compound dasher and the mechanism for operating the same,'as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the churn-body, B the removable cover for the same, and C the central revolving dasher-staff, which passes through a central aperture E in the cover, and the lower en d of which staff is provided with two or more series of propeller-blades D.
Around the upper edge of the churn-body, below the iange or shoulder a, is placed a frame consisting of two parts F and F, the part F being hinged by its arms G and hinges g upon the vertical arms or standards G of the other part F. The two parts, when placed together and united by the hooks f on opposite sides, will clamp closely around the upper rim of the churn below and in'ipinging upon the flange or shoulder a, as above stated. Near their upper ends the standards G G are connected by a cross-piece Il, and above this and parallel thereto is' journaled a shaft I, the middle part of which is bent to form a crank J, while one of its ends is provided with a crank and handle K for turning it. If desired, a lily-wheel or balancewheel may also be fastened upon shaft I, for the purpose of facilitating operation of the churn.
The cross-piece H is provided on its under side with a gudgeon or bearing h, for the upper end of the central revolving dasher-staff,`
which is shaped to form a spiral C', adapted to engage a thimble L, which is let into the disk M and provided with a corresponding female spiral. This disk or plate M fastened on opposite sides upon parallel arms N N, the lower part-s of which, below the disk, are preferably rounded and pass through apertures l l2 in the cover B-one on each side of the central aperture E-through which the central sta C is inserted. To the lower ends of these arms N N, which project down into the churn, is attached the vertically-reciprocating dasher O,which maybe of any desired configuration, and is provided with a central opening for the passage of the central staff. a
The upper ends of the parallel arms N Nare connected by a yoke P, which engages the crank J on drive-shaft I, so that when this shaft is turned by means of its handle a vertically-reciprocating or up-and-down motion is imparted to the arms N N and dasher O. At the same time a rotary reciprocating or revolving motion is imparted to the lower dasher D and its staff C bythe upper spiralled part G of the latter by means of the verticaliy-reciprocating disk M, the central thimble L of whieh,as we have seen, engages the spiral.
The removable frame which supports the dashers and their operatin g mechanism may be firmly fastened upon the churn by means of the hooks f and locking-arms Q, which are pivoted-one on each sideto the inner sides of the standards G and rabbeted at their lower free ends, so as to form shoulders R, overlapping the cover when the arms are in a vertical position. When in this position, (illustrated in Fig. 1,) itwillbe seen thatthey operate not only tohold the frame rmly upon thechurn, (in conjunction with the hooks f,) but also serve as means for locking the churncover B firmly in its place. At the sainetime the cover, dashers, and frame may be removed in a moment of time simply by unhooking hooks f f and swinging the arms Q Q to one side out of engagement with the cover.
It will be observed ihatby turning thehan- ICO dle both dashers are brought into action si multaneously, thus constituting a compound dasher, by the aid of which the churning is effected rapidly and with a minimum ofA labor and expenditure of power.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a churn, the combination of the body a flange formed thereon, a hinged frame on the body, the lower end of which is held in place by the said flange, a dasher-shaft having its upper end formed into a spiral, arms earrying a disk provided with a threaded thimble to engage the threaded portion of the dashershaft, a dasher on the lower end of the arms, a yoke on the upper end, and a crank-shaft mounted in the hinged frame and engaging the yoke, whereby, when the said yoke is operated, a rotaryreciprocating motion will be imparted to the dasher-shaft and a verticallyreeiproeating motion to the dasher, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WV. PARRISII.
