ROAD-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,545, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed March 29, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. FORTNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomerys Ferry, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Road-Carts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of vehicles which are known as road-carts, and it has reference to an improved method of connecting the seat-bars to the shafts in such a manner as to absolutely prevent them from becoming accident-ally disconnected. Heretofore the seat-bars have usually been connected to the shafts simply by means of transverse bolts, the nuts of which have always been more or less liable to work loose, thus causing the seat-bars to become detached and the occupant to be thrown to the ground.
My improvement consists in connecting the seat-bars and shafts by means of a clip-plate, a transverse bolt, and a lock-nut, all of which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the clip-plate detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail View of the washer. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the lock-nut. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A designates a portion of one of the shafts, and B one of the seat-bars, of an ordinary road-cart.
O is a U-shaped clip-plate, which is made of proper size and shape to embrace the shaft A and bar B at the point of intersection. The upper ends of the arms of said clip-plate are provided with eyes or openings D D for the passage of the bolt E, which extends transversely through the clip-plate and through a suitable opening in the seat-bar and the shaft. The head F of the bolt rests against -one of the outer sides of one of the arms of the clip 0. The other arm of said clip is provided in its outer side with a shallow angular recess Seiial No. 305,289. (No model.)
G, adapted to receive a washer H of suitable size to fit in the said recess and to project beyond the same. The outer face of the washer is provided with a series of angular notches or recesses I, extending radially from the central opening, by means of which it is adjusted upon the bolts.
J designates the loclcnut, which is provided at one or more of its sides with notches or recesses K, extending obliquely from its inner side or face. Into these notches are inserted springs L, of steel or other suitable material, which are thus caused to extend obliquely from theinner face of the nut. These springs may be secured in any suitable manner, preferably by simply compressing the material of which the nut is constructed upon their inner ends. It will thus be seen that when the nut is screwed down tightly against the washer the projecting springs L will engage the notches or recesses I in the face of said washer, and thereby prevent the said nut from becoming accidentally unscrewed or loose upon the bolt.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The clipplate 0 serves the double purpose of connecting and supporting the seat-bar and shaft and of forming a socket for the washer, whereby the latter is prevented from rotating. WVhen the bolt is inserted transversely through the shaft and seat-bar, it is braced and strengthened by the clip, and, being secured by means of the nut J and washer H, it is retained in position without danger of becoming loose, inasmuch as the springs L of the lock-nut, engaging the recessesI in the washer, absolutely prevent the nut from unscrewing or becoming loose upon the bolt.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with a clip-plate provided with an angular recess surrounding one of its bolt-holes, of the bolt, the washerseated in said recess and provided with radial notches in its outer face, and the lock-nut having obliquely-extending springs secured in recesses in its inner face, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the clip-plate having an angular recess, the bolt, the washer having a series of radial notches in its outer face, and the lock-nut provided in its inner face with a series of obliqu e notches, in which springs pr0-' an angular recess in one of its outer faces, a
transverse bolt, an angular washer seated in the recess of the clip-bolt and provided in its outer face with a series of radial notches, and
a lock-nut provided with springs extending I 5 obliquely from its inner face, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
