STAPLE-DRIVER.
SBECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,537, dated June 18, 1889.

To all whom it may colwcrn:
Be it known that I, EMIL lWI. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alta, in the county of Placer and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Staple-Drivers, of which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to an iniprovemcnt in staple-drivers; a-nd it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the body, which is made in two members, the largermember having the longitudinal groove B, in which the driving-rod C works. The said driving rod or plunger is provided at an intermediate point of its length with an annular shoulder or stop D, which is adapted to limit the play of the driving-rod by contacting with the upper end of the body and also with the end of the guide E, as shown. This guide E consists of a metallic arni or bracket having its lower end provided with a longitudinal slot, through which the securingbolt passes to adj ustably secure it to the body, and has its upper end bent inward and provided with a notch G, through which the driving-rod passes, as shown. The smaller or front section of the body is provided in its lower end with a longitudinal slot or notch H, and the staple rack or guide I has its lower end entering said notch, so that the staples will be guided thereinto, and thereby brought into position below the end of the drivingrod. The staple rack or guide consists of a small plate, which extends outward from the body and is curved to one side, as shown' At its inner or lower end the rack is provided with the lateral wingsavhich are placed against the front side of the body, and through which the securing-bolts are passed to fasten the guide to the body. On the sides of the guide, at the inner or lower end of the same, I secure the inwardly and downwardly curved ribs 12, which serve to guide the staples positively into position beneath the driving-rod and hold them upright until forced home by the said rod.
J designates a staple-holder, which is pivoted between two lugs K on the front side of the body, and conforms to the staple-rack, so as to hold the staples thereon. lln practice the staples are placed on the guide-rack, and will slide down the same through the slot Iil into position beneath the driving-rod. The device is then placed over the point at which it is desired to drive the staple, and the driving rod or plunger is then given a sharp blow, so as to force the staple home. The driving-rod is then raised, and the next staple will automatically slide into position to be operated upon.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very efficient and easily-operated device by means of which staples can be rapidly driven home, so as to secure the screens of doors and windows in place. By suitably raising or lowering the guide E the play of the Operating-rod will be adjusted to the height of the staples being used, and the guide-rack can be adjusted to the thickness of the staple by interposing packing between the same and the front side of the body. The staples can be easily slipped over the upper edge of the guide-rack after the staple-holder has been raised, and after the staple-holder has been lower-ed will be securely held on the rack.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1.
