JAMES E. BUSENBARRIOK, OF ROBINSON, KANSAS.
GRAIN-WEIGHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,462, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed February 1889. Serial No. 299,285. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. BUSENBAR- RICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Robinson, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Grain-Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is directed to certain improvement-s in automatic rotary grain-measurers; and it consists of arotary compartment receptacle preferably cylindric in its general outline, and having its axis hung in the short arms of a lever or pivoted bail carrying a weight or counterpoise upon a graduated extension or scale-beam, said cylinder or receptacle having applied to it opposite each compartment a projection preferably provided with a frictional roll or wheel which strikes against a stop applied to one side of the lever or bail support, a spring stop or snap also being employed to arrest the backward move ment or reaction of the cylinder or receptacle, as will be more fully understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved automatic rotary grain-measurer. Fi 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the measurer. Fig. 41 is a detailed View disclosing more particularly the spring stop or snap.
In the organization of my invention I employ a rotary receptacle or cylinder A, preferably having cylindric sides or heads and di vided up into a number of radial compartments or chambers a a, to receive and hold the grain or other substance to be measured. The receptacle or cylinder A has projecting from its sides or heads the ends of a central axis in the form of. gudgeons a a.
B is a skeleton form of inclosure or casing having its vertical sides suitably connected together at the lower portions by boards I) 1), arranged to incline downwardly and inwardly, but spaced apart a short distance to provide an opening or exit 12 through which the contents from the rotary receptacle or cylinder, when dumped or tilted, may be discharged below. In the sides or boards 1) Bare circular openings Z) Z) for the passage therethrough of the gu dgeons a a of the rotary cylinder or receptacle A.
G is a bail-shaped lever fulcruined upon studs or pivots c c, projecting from the sides of the casing B intermediately. of the openings b b and the front edges of said boards or sides. The extreme inner ends of the short arms of the lever 0 receive and support the gudgeons a a of the rotary receptacle or cylinder B. The bail-lever C has projecting or extending centrally from its forward or connecting bar a graduated arm or extension 0, which serves as a scale-beam, the same carrying an adjustable weight or counterpoise 0 To one side of the casing B, upon the inner surface, is applied a spring-encircled stop D of a proximate bolt-shape form, which stands in the path of rotation of a series of projections (1 (I applied to one side or head of the cylinder or receptacle A, and preferably provided with frictional rolls or wheels. These projections are arranged one opposite each compartment of the cylinder or receptacle A about at its middle. Standing a short distance away from the stop D, and applied to that side of the casing or inclosure B, is a curved stop or piece 6.
Overhanging the cylinder or receptacle A is secured to a projection or bracket of one side of the casing B a proximately hookshaped spring stop or snap f, its outer free end being adapted to snap by or spring down upon the rear side, or at that side thereof opposite to the plane of rotation of the cylinder or receptacle, and thus prevent, after the dumping of a compartment or chamber of the cylinder or receptacle, a reactory movement of the cylinder or receptacle.
It will be observed, with the counterpoise or weight C properly adjusted upon the scalebeam or extension 0 of the bail-shaped lever C, and after theplacing of the required quantity of grain, or whatever else it is desired to weigh in the uppermost compartment of the cylinder or receptacle A, that the scale-beam with its counterpoise will rise, and the cylinder will consequently fali, carrying the projection (if out of contact with the stop D, permitting the cylinder to rotate to dump or discharge its contained grain or contents. The stop D, under the action of its spring, will, after the passage of the projection d, be automatieally returned to its original position. Further movement at this time of the cylinder or receptacle A will be prevented, the next or preceding compartment thereof having been brought into position to be filled and the weighted scale-beam of the ba'ilshaped lever supporting the cylinder or receptacle having returned to its original position. The cylinder is now ready to receive, Weigh, and discharge another quantity of grain, said op eration being repeated successively until the required quantity or all of the material has been weighed or disposed of.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The grain or other measnrer having the rota-ry compartment cylinderor receptacle hung or journaled upon a bail-shaped lever having a Weighted graduated arm or extension, a spring-encircled stop disposed in the path of rotation of a series of projections upon the rotary cylinder or receptacle, and the spring stop or snap preventing any reactory move ment of said cylinder or receptacle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses 4 JAMES E. BUSENBARRICK.
