NS FOR CHANGING THE CENTER OF GR Y 0F GUNS, N0. .921. Patents une 11, 1889.
N, PETERS, Pholciflhbgnlphcr, Wnhi nnnnnnn C.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM R. MILLER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MEANS FOR CHANGING THE CENTER OF GRAVITY OF GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,921, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed January 28, 1889. Serial No. 297,819- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM R. MILLER, of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Changing the Position of the Center of Gravity of aGun, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means whereby the center of gravity of a gun may be changed at pleasure; and it consists in providing the stock of the gun with a weight which is adjustable in position with reference to the butt-plate, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a. part of a gun-stock provided with my invention, and Fig. 2 a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line o: 00. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate modifications in the construction of the invention, as hereinafter described.
In the said drawings, A is the gun-stock, and B a cavity formed therein. Vithin this cavity is placed the adj Listing-weight before alluded to.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the weightO consists of three metallic-blocks a, interiorly threaded and screwed on a threaded stem 1), which is preferably of wood, and may be graduated, as shown in Fig. 5. The blocks a are by preference made of lead, and the weight may consist of a single block or two or more sections, as desired. The weight is adjustable in position on the stem, so as to change or shift the center of gravity toward or from the butt-plate, and by its being in more than one piece it may be distributed over considerable space on the stem. To remove the stem and weight, it is only necessary to open the sliding door in the butt-plate.
In Fig. 4 the weight consists of three lead balls D, and instead of the stem 1) to hold the balls in a required position Within the cavity, a series of balls E of lighter weight-say of woodare employed. It Will be seen that with, say, three or four lead balls and the remaining ones of wood such distribution of the weight can be effected as to place the center of gravity in almost any position within the stock.-
In view of the great variety of ways by which the object of this invention may be accomplished I do not restrict myself to the means for shifting the center of gravity of the gun, shown and described; but
I claim as my invention 1. A gun having aweight of constant grayity adjustable in position longitudinally of the stock and means for securing the weight in its adjusted positions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a gun the stock thereof having therein a Weight of constant gravity in two or more sections susceptible of independent movement, adjustable longitudinally of the stock, and means for securing the said weight in its adjusted positions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a gun the stock thereof havinga1on-' gitudinal cavity therein, combined with a threaded stem inserted in the said cavity and a Weight of constant gravity screwed on the said stem, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
