BOILER-FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,629, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed September 22, 1888. Serial No, 286,111. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT FRANCIS JONES, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Im-; proved Boiler-Feeder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boiler feeder which is simple and durable in construction and effective and automatic in operation, at all times keeping the water-level in the boiler constant.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation of one of the valves.
The improved boiler-feeder is provided with a tank A, into which discharges the pipe B. connected with a suitable source of watersupply and provided with a valve 0, operated from a float D,hel d in the tank A, so that the said valve 0 is closed when the tank is nearly full, thus keeping a constant supply of water in the said tank A. The bottom of the tank A is connected by a pipe E, having a valve E ,with a heater F of any approved construction, so that the water passes through the said heater F, is heated, and then discharged into the outlet-pipe G, extending upward and carrying a check-valve G before connecting with the upper end of a closed feeding-reservoir II.
From the bottom of the reservoir H leads a pipe I, provided with a check-valve I and extending into the bottom of the boiler J, of any approved construction, and in which the water-level is to be kept constant by the boiler-feeder. Between the exterior of the boiler J and the check-valve I is located a valve 1 (shown in detail in Fig. 3,) and serving to close the pipe I. The stem I of the valve I extends to the outside and carries on its outer end a weighted ball I which automatically shuts off the connection between the reservoir H and the boiler J.
From the top of the boiler J leads a pipe K, provided with a valve K, to a closed vessel L, and a similar pipe N, provided with a valve N, connects the lower end of the said closed vessel L with the boiler J below its normal water-level. The pipes K and N serve to equalize the pressure in the vessel L and maintain a water-level in the vessel L corresponding to the water-level in the boiler J. From the top of the vessel L leads a pipe 0, which connects with the upper end of'the reservoir H and serves to admit steam into the said reservoir H from the boiler J.
The lower end of the pipe 0 is closed bya valve P, held inside of the vessel L and pivotally connected with an arm P, fulcrumed in the vessel L and carrying a downwardlyext-ending rod P supporting a float P in the lower end of the said vessel L. A second float Q is held alongside the float P in the vessel L, and is supported on a rod Q, pivotally connected with one arm of a bell-crank lever Q pivotally connected at its other arm by a link Q with an arm Q projecting from a vertical shaft Q extending through the 1 shell of the vessel L to the outside.
The shaft Q is mounted to turn in suitable bearings in the said vessel L, and is provided with an arm Q pivotally connected by the link Q with an arm R, projecting from the vertical shaftR, mounted to rotate in suitable bearings on the reservoir H, and projecting at its upper end into a box S, passing through the shell of the reservoir H into the interior of the same, being secured at the inner end in a closed receptacle T, held in the u er end of the said reservoir H. The upper end of the shaft R in the box S carries an arm R pivotally connected by a link R with an arm R, operating a valve-plug R held in the bottom of the receptacle T and serving to establish connection between the interior of the receptacle T and the interior of the reservoir H at the bottom of the said receptacle T. The latter is provided near the cover of the reservoir H with apertures T, through which water can flow into the receptacle T when the valve-plug R is closed. In
this receptacle T is held a float U, supported on an upwardly-extending rod U, pivotally connected with a lever U fulcrumed in the inside of the receptacle T and carrying a valve-stem U, supporting a valve U, adapted to open and close the lower end of a pipe U, leading to the outside.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the checkvalve 1 is closed and the operator opens the valve E in the pipe E, then water flows from the tank A through the heater F into the pipe G through the check-valve G into the reservoir II, which is thus filled, and also fills the lower part of the receptacle T by the water flowing through the openings T into the said receptacle T. The float U in the latter rises sufficiently to move the lever U upward, whereby the valve U is seated on the lower end of the pipe U and the latter is closed, so that exterior connection with the receptacle T is cut oit. hen the water in the boiler J now falls below the normal level, the float P in the closed vessel L sinks downward, thereby the lever P unseats the valve P on the lower end of the pipe 0, so that the steam from the boiler J in the vessel L passes through the pipe 0 into the top of the reservoir H and exerts the same pressure against the water in the said reservoir II that there is in the boiler. As the said reservoir H is located above the boiler, the weight of the said water in the reservoir and the pressure of the boiler are suffieient to open the check-valve 1 so that the water flows through the pipe I into the boiler J. As the water rises in the latter, it also rises in the vessel L, and the float P is again raised, so that the valve P closes the lower end of the pipe 0, and the steam-pressure in the reservoir II is cut off. The check-valve I thenimmediately closes and prevents a further flow of water from the rcservoirI'Iinto the boilerJ At the same time the float Q causes a swinging motion of the bell-crank lever Qiwhich, by its connections with the shaft and the shaft R, causes a turning of the latter, so that the float-valve R is turned, thereby opening the bottom of the receptacle T into the reservoir II and permitting the water in the Said receptacle T to empty into the reservoir II, it
being understood that the water-level in the latter is below the bottom of the said receptacle T. The outflow of the water in the said receptacle T causes a downward movement of the float U, which again opens the valve U and establishes the usual atmospheric pressure in the vessel II. The latter is again filled, as before described, as the checlcvalve G now opens, and is again closed when the said reservoir II is full, and the valve U closes the lower end of the pipe U The above-described operation is automatically repeated whenever the water in the boiler J sinks below its normal level.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a boiler-feeder, the combination,with the boiler, of a closed reservoir connected by a pipe having a checlevalve with the said boiler, a closed vessel in communication at the top and bottom with the said boiler, a pipe leading from the top of the said closed vessel into the top of the said reservoir, a valve held on the said pipe, and a float located in the said vessel and connected with the saidvalve to open and close the said pipe, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a boiler-feeder, the combination,with a closed reservoir connected with a water supply and with the boiler, of a pipe leading from the top of the said reservoir, a closed vessel in communication with the steam and water compartment of the boiler and connected at its upper end with the said pipe, a valve adapted to close the said pipe, and a float held in the said closed vessel and operating the said valve, substantially as shown and described.
In a boiler-feeder, the combinatiomwith a closed reservoir in communication with the boiler and provided with a supply-pipe having a check-valve, of a steam-pipe leading from the upper end of the said reservoir, a closed vessel connected at its top with the said steam-pipe and held in communication with the steam and water compartment of the boiler, a valve for opening and closing the said pipe, and a float held in the said closed vessel to open and close the said valve and the said check-valve, substantially as shown and de scribed.
4:. In a boiler-feeder, the combination, with a reservoir connected with the boiler, of a supply-pipe having a cheelevalve and discharging into the top of the said reservoir, a receptacle held in or near the top of the said reservoir and in communication with the latter, a float held in the said receptacle, and a valve operated by the said float and adapted to close or connect the outside with the interior of the said receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a boiler-feeder, the combination,with a reservoir connected with the boiler, of a supply-pipe having a check-valve and discharging into the top of the said reservoir, a receptacle held in or near the top of the said reservoir and in communication with the latter, a float held in the said receptacle, a valve operated by the said float and adapted to close or connect the outside with the interior of the said receptacle, and a steam-pipe leading from the top of the said reservoir and connecting with the live steam in the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a boiler-feeder, the combination, with a reservoir connected with the boiler, of a supplypipe having a check-valve and connected with the said reservoir, a receptacle held in or near the top of the said reservoir and in communication wit-l1 the latter near its top, a float held in the said receptacle, a valve held in the said receptacle and opening to the outside, the said valve being operated by the said float, a steam-pipe leading from the said reservoir, a closed vessel connected with the said pipe and in communication with the steam and water compartments of the boiler, a valve for closing and opening the said steampipe, and a float held in the said closed vessel and operating. the said valve, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a boiler-feeder, the combination, With a reservoir connected with the boiler, of a supply-pipe having a check-valve and connected with the said reservoir, a receptacle held in or near the top of the said reservoir and in communication with the latter near its top, a float held in the said receptacle, avalve held in the said receptacle and opening to the outside, the said valve being operated by the said float, a steam-pipe leading from the said reservoir, a closed vessel connected with the said pipe and in communication with the steam and Water compartments of the boiler, a valve for closingand opening the said steampipe, a float held in the said closed vessel and operating the said valve, and a second float held in the said closed vessel and operating a plug-valve in the bottom of the said closed receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a boiler-feeder, the combination, with the boiler, of a closed reservoir located above the said boiler, a pipe connecting the bottom of the said reservoir with the bottom of the boiler, a check-valve held in the said pipe, a second valve held in the said pipe between the boiler and the said check-valve, and a Weighted ball secured to the valve-stem of the said second valve, substantially as shown and described.
