SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,625, dated June 4, '1889.
Application filed September 18, 1883. Serial No. 285,683. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHAUNCEY HOOKER, of Abingdon, in the county of Knox and the State of Illinois, have invented a new 5 and Improved Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in gates for which United States Letters Patent No. 257,330 were granted to me on the 2d day of May, 1882.
The object of my present invention is to provide a new and improved gate which is simple and durable in construction, is locked automatically, and can be easily opened and I closed from either side of the roadway.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line a; a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the gate-locking de- Vice; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of one of the rollers supporting the gate.
The gate A is provided with the longitudinal bars A, A and A connected with each other at their ends by the vertical beams A and A and strengthened by suitable braces between said end beams. The upper longitudinal bar A extends a short distance beyond the beam A and from the middle bar A extends rearwardly from said post A the inclined bar A, supported at its outer end by the bar A connected at its lower end to the bottom bar A and the rear beam A.
' Below the upper longitudinal bar A is arranged the curved rail B, secured to the posts 0, D, and E, held in line with the gate A. The upper front part of the beam B is curved and the lower rear part of the same is similarly shaped, so as to form tracks for the double-flanged rollers G and G, of which the upper one G travels with its flanges in a groove of the bar B and supports between the said flanges the wedge-shaped lower edge of the bar A. The lower roller G rests on the wedge-shaped upper edge of the inclined extension A and travels with its flanges in a groove formed on the under side of the beam B. The inward motion of the roller Gis limited by the stop B, formed on the inner end of the beam B, and the similar motion of the roller G is limited by the stop B formed on the under side of the beam B at the inner end of the groove. The outward motion of the rollers G and G is limited by the stoppins A and A, secured, respectively, to the under side of the longitudinal bar A and to the upper edge of the inclined extension A". o;
It will be seen that the rollers G and G, as illustrated in Fig. 1, are placed in such a position as to support the gate A entirely and at the same time to permit a forward and backward sliding of said gate on said double- 7o flanged rollers G and G, while they travel in the grooves formed on the top and bottom of the fixed beam B. Then the gate is closed it extends between the inner post D and the outermost post F, and the gate is prevented from moving sidewise by the short stop I, placed opposite the post D, so that the lower end of the gate is held between the said post D and the stop I;
On the front end of the gate A is secured 8 the fixed catch J, adapted to pass over the fixed catch K, secured to the outer post F. On the extension of the catch J is pivoted the latch L, adapted to engage the lower edge of the fixed catch K on the post F, and said latch L is connected by the link N with a link 0, hung on or suitably secured to the upper longitudinal bar A. Thelink N' is also connected with the rod P, adapted to move longitudinally in the bearings P, se- 9 cured to the bar A, and the inner end of said rod P is connected with one end of a rope Q, which passes over a pulley R, mounted on the upper end of the post 0. The rope Q, after leaving the pulley R, divides into the ropes Q and Q which extend in opposite directions from each other and pass over the pulleys T and T, mounted, respectively, on the posts U and U, erected along the roadway a short distance on each side of the gate A. I
The outer ends of the ropes Q and Q hang downward and are provided with the handles Q, for pulling on said ropes Q and Q The operation is as follows: \Vhen the gate A is in a closed position and is locked, as shown in Fig.1, then the under side of the fixed catch J has passed over the top edge of the fixed catch K, while the lower edge of the latter is engaged by the hook end of the weighted latch L, whereby the gate is held firmly in a locked position. The rear ends of the gate rest on the rollers G and G, which are placed in such a relative position to said gate that the latter is completely supported by said rollers. It the operator coming in either direction on the roadway toward the gate desires to open the latter, then he pulls on the respective handle Q whereby the rope Q or Q exerts a pull on the rope Q, so that the rod P is drawn toward the rear in the direction of the arrow to, and the latch L is disengaged by its connection with the said rod P from the fixed catch K on the post F. i As soon as the latch L is disengaged, if the operator continues to pull on the handle Q, then the rod P exerts a pressure against the gate A in the direction of the arrow a on account of the said gate being connected by the said links 0 and N with said rod P, so that the gate is moved toward the rear, traveling 011 the rollers G and G, which move in their respective grooves on the beam B until the stops A and A prevent a further rotary motion of the rollers G and G. The gate is then in its open position and the roller G is at the rear end of the groove on the top of the beam 13, while the other roller G is at the rear end of the bottom groove on the beam B, said rollers G and G resting against the pins A and A". If the operator now desires to close the gate, he can pull on either handle Q so as to exert a pressure against the gate A in the forward direction, as the rope Q, by the rearward position of the gate, extends from the pulley R toward the rear post E. As soon as the upper roller G has reached the middle of the curved part of the beam 13, then the gate A closes of its own accord by the momentum imparted to it by pulling on the handle The fixed catch J passes over the top edge of the fixed catch K, and the hook end of the latch L passes under the said fixed catch K, thus locking the gate in position, as shown in Fig. 1.
It is understood that the gate is pulled halfway and moves the other half by its momentum in both opening and closing the gate.
Instead of curving the rail B, as shown, I may form the raillike an inverted V,the apex being the highest point in the center of the rail.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a rearward extension of the gate A, of the curved beam B, provided with grooves in its upper and lower edges, and the rollers G and G, adapted to travel in said grooves and supporting said gate, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the rearward extension of the gate A, of the curved beam B, provided with grooves in its upper and lower edges, the rollers G and G ,adaptcd to travel in said grooves and support said gate, and means, substantially as described, for imparting an endwise motion to said gate, as set forth.
The combination, with the gate A, of the curved beam B, provided with grooves on its upper and lower edges, the rollers G and G, supporting said gate and adapted to travel. in said grooves, and means, substantially as shown and described, for automatically loeking said gate when in a closed position, as set forth.
4. In a gate, the combination, with the longitudinal bar A and the extension A, of the curved fixed beam B and the rollers G and G, held, respectively, between said bar A and the top of the beam B and the extension A and the bottom of the beam B, substantially as shown and described.
