DEVICE FOR CATCHIING ANIMALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,583, dated June 4, 1889.

Be it known that I, THOMAS VVICKHAM, of Henrietta township, (Hub City P. O.) in the of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Animal- Catcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved animal-catcher, specially adapted for leg.
The invention consists in a frame, a segmental arm fulcrumed on the said frame and actuated by a spring, and a band secured to the said-frame and the said segmental arm.
The invention also consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement in an open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in a closed position, and Fig. 3 is a sectional end view of the same on the lines x a: of Fig. 1.
The improved animal-catcher is provided with a frame A, having a bottom plate B cut away in its front edge at B, and provided on one end with an upwardly-extending arm B in which and the bottom plate B is mounted to turn a shaft 0, carrying on its lower end an outwardly-extending arm D, on the outer end of which is formed a segmental arm E, having teeth E cut in its front edge, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. The outer free end connected with one end of a band F, preferably of leather, connected at its other end to the inner end of a U-shaped arm B secured on the top of the bottom plate B opposite the'arm B The segmental arm E is so arranged that when in a closed position it passes into and through the U-shaped arm B as is plainly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
On the upper end of the shaft 0, outside of the arm B is secured a tripping-arm G, engaging at one end a notched end of the tripping-lever H, fulcrumed at H on the arm B catching hogs, sheep, &c., by the on the bottom arm B and is provided with a notch I, fitting over the shaft 0 next to the tripping-arm G.
A coiled spring K is coiled on the shaft 0 and secured by one end toa collar 0, secured on the said shaft directly under the arm 15 The other end of the said spring K is fastened to the bottom plate B, as is plainly shown in Fig. 2. The spring K has the tendency to throw the lever D and its segmental arm E in the direction of the arrow to, so that the segmental arm E passes into the U-shaped arm 13 as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The teeth E on the segmental arm E are adapted to be engaged by a pawl L, fulcrumed plate B, and the middle part of the U-shaped arm B The pawl L is pressed in contact with the teeth E of the segmental arm E'by a'spring N, held on the said pawl L, its free end pressing against the arm B A ring 0 is secured to the arm B and carries one end of a rope P, of suitable length.
The operation is as follows: Then the operator desires to set the animal-catcher, he throws the segmental arm E outward into the position shown in Fig. 1, so that the coiled spring K is placed under heavy tension. I At the same time the tripping-arm G is moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 by the turning of the shaft 0, sothat the notched end of the tripping-lever H engages one end of the said tripping-arm G, thereby locking the shaft 0, the arm D, and the segmental arm E into place. The end G of the tripping-arm G rests against the pin I of the plate I, so that the latter is held in place on the arm 13 of the frame A. When the operator now desires to catch an animal-such as a hog or sheep he takes hold of the handle J and quickly moves the frame A forward, so that the outer end of the tripping-lever H strikes against the animals leg above the ankle, whereby the said lever ll disengaged at its notched end from the end of the tripping-arm G. The tension of the coiled spring Know exerts its power and turns the shaft 0, so that. the arm I) and the segmental arm E swing in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the band F is thrown around the leg of the animal and the segmental arm E is locked in place by one of its teeth E engaging the pawl L, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. l. The animals leg is thus secured, and the handle J, with its I plate 1, becomes detached from the arm I as the pin 1 is disengaged from the end G of the tripping-arm G. The operator has held of the free end of the rope P, and thereby holds the animal, the handle J being entirely removed. hen the operator desires to release the catcher from the animals leg, he presses the outer end of the pawl I, inward, so as to disengage the pawl from the teeth E of the segmental arm E, and the latter can again be swungoutward into the position shown in Fig. 1. Thus it will be seen that with my improved device an animal can be ery quickly caught by the leg without inury.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an animal-catcher, the combination, with a frame, of a segmental arm fulcrumed on the said frame and actuated by a spring, and a band secured to the said frame and the said segmental arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an animal-catcher, the combination, with a frame, of a segmental arm fulcrumed. on the said frame and actuated by a spring, a band secured on the said segmental. arm and the said frame, and a tripping device for locking the said segmental. arm in an open position, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an animal-catcher, the combination,
with a frame, of a segmental toothed arm fulcrumed on the said frame and actuated by a spring, a band secured to the said segmental arm, 'fulerunnnl on the said frame and engage the said toothed segmental arm, staniially as shown and described.

In an animal-catcher, the combination, with a frame and a handle held on the said frame and adapted to be detached, of a shaft mounted to turn in the said frame and aetuated by a spring, a tripping-arm held on the said shaft and adapted to hold the said handle in place, a tripping-lever fulcrmned on the said frame and engaged by the said tr'ipping-arm, a segmental arm held on the said shaft, and a bandv secured to the said segmental arm and the said frame, substantially as shown and described.
7. In an animal-catcher, the combination, with a frame and a handle held on the said frame and adapted to be detached, of a shaft mounted to turn in the said frame and actuated by a spring, a tripping-arm held on the said shaft and adapted to hold the said handle in place, atripping-lever fulcrumed on the said frame and engaged by the said tripping arm, a segmental arm held on the said shaft, a band secured to the said segmental arm and the said frame, and a spring-pawl fulcrumed on the said frame and adapted to engage notches in the said segmental arm, substantially as shown and described.
