Description

G. SCHMIDT.
(No Model.)
GAR STARTER.
No. 404,563. Patented June 4, 1889.
N. warms Phnlo-Lilhographen Washington 0. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV SCHMIDT, OF RHEINE, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
CAR-STARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,563, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed March 11, 1889. Serial Ila-302,812. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV SCHMIDT, of Rheine, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Starters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-starters, and has for its object to provide a car-starter which will be simple in construction and effective in operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the car-starter, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. 7
The car-starter is constructed with a base portionA, preferably formed with the inclined shank A, to bring the lever-handle B at an incline. The lever-handle B preferably consists of awrought-iron tube or pipe for the sake of lightness, and is secured to the shank A by means of the shouldered end of the latter projecting into the handle B, as shown in dotted lines. The base A is formed with the lever-arm 0, provided with the hardened plate d, preferably formed of cast-steel and projecting from end of arm 0, and detachably connected thereto by means of the shank C, located in an open-ended slot (1' in the upper surface of arm 0, and secured in place by a set-screw A or other suitable means. By this means the plate d may be detached from the base A to avoid exposing the latter to the fire when the plate d requires repairing or sharpening.
The plate cl, which in using the car-starter is located under the rim of a car-wheel, must be as hard and sharp as possible, so as not to slip on the rim of the wheel.
WVithin an opening in the base A is mounted a grooved roller a, provided with flanges b I), having ratchet-teeth a. By means of the grooved roller a, which is adapted to fit over the crown or head of a railroad-rail, the carstarter can be easily moved on the rail to insert the plate (1 and arm 0 between the rail and the rim of a car-wheel.
To prevent the roller afrom revolving backward when the load is heavy or the rails are wet, the roller is held by a pawl c, mounted on a projection c on the shank A and engaging the ratchet-teeth a of flange b. A second pawl may be employed, if desired, to engage the ratchet-teeth of flange b.
The grooved roller a'is of small diameter to permit it to be pushed as far as possible under a car-wheel to give the greatest possible effect to the leverage of the car-starter.
The lever-arm is formed at its end with the inclined under side 0 to aid in inserting it between the rail and acar-wheel and assist in the leverage.
The proportion of the two lever-armsz'. 6., the arm 0 and shank A, with handle B-may be about as one to ten.
By means of this invention a very light, simple, durable, and effective car-starter is provided, which secures a strong grip upon the rail, enabling a heavily-laden car to be easily started and propelled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A car-starter consisting of the base A, with inclined shank A, pawl 0, mounted thereon, and tubular inclined handle B, the arm 0, with detachable plate d, and the grooved roller a, having flanges b b, and ratchet-teeth a on flange b, with which the pawl c engages, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV SCHMIDT.
