SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,549, dated June 41889.

To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, HJALMAR LINDEsTRM, of Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cutter-bar-actuating mechanism for mowingmachines of that class wherein reciprocatory movement of the cutter bar is produced through the medium of a rockin g lever which is pivotally supported at its center and provided atits ends with wheels or rollers which engage a scalloped ring-shaped or annular cam upon the main driving-wheel ofthe machine.
The invention consists in thematters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
A main feature of novelty embraced in my invention consists in constructing' the engaging surfaces of the rollers upon the rocking lever and the scalloped cam with gear-teeth or cogs arranged to intermesh with each other. The presence of such intermeshing gear-teeth upon said parts has the advantage of producing an equal wear upon all parts of the wheels and cam, for the reason that the gear-teeth cause the wheels to rotate uniformly, while in the absence of such gear-teeth the wheels are liable to become flattened or unequally worn, especially if there is any slight irregularity in the cam, thereby rendering the entire structure useless and inoperative.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is aplan view of the frame, drive-wheels, and gearing' of a mower constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken is a sectional elevation of the cam-wheel upon line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail section taken upon line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail View of a wheel provided with an interior instead of an exterior cam. Fig. G is a detail section on line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
As illustrated in the said drawings, A indicates the machine-frame, and B B the main wheels, which are mounted upon an axle B2, and 011e of which B is the drive-wheel of the machine.
O is a rock-shaft mounted in bearings ot a upon the machine-frame and provided adjacent to the drive-wheel B with a rocking lever C having arms of equallength at either side of the rock-shaft and provided at its ends with toothed wheels or pinions D D, which interni csh with a scalloped ring or cam E, secured upon the said wheelB adjacent to the rim thereof, said cam being provided with spurs or teeth intermeshing with those of the wheels or pinions D D. Said wheels or pinions are arranged at such distance apart that when one of the same is engaged with a depression of the scalloped cam the other pinion will be engaged withan elevation thereof. From this construction it is entirely obvious that as the main wheel B rotates the lever O and shaft C will be given a rocking or oscillatory motion, the said pinions D D being pushed alternately inward as they pass over the elevations of the said cam E. It will of course be understood that as one wheel rises upon or is forced inwardly by the action of one of the elevations the other wheel is thereby moved or pressed into the depression which is opposite to it at the time, the motion transmitted to the cutter-bar being produced by the passing of the wheels alternately over the prominences of the cam.
The oscillatory movement given to the shaft O by the gear described may be transmitted to the cutter-bar in any manner found convenient or desirable. In the particular construction illustrated connecting devices for this purpose are made as follows:
C2 is a rigid depending arm attached to the rock-shaft C by the set-screw c', which passes through a hub or projection on the arm C2. Said arm is provided with a vertical groove c, Figs. 4 and 6, in one of its faces.
F is a sleeve mounted Vto slide and also adapted to rotate upon the shaft C, said sleeve being provided with a depending arm F', Figs. 4 and 6.
G is a vertically-arranged hand-lever piv- IOO oted upon a bracket A upon the frame and provided at its lower end with prongs g g, which engage pins 7L 7L in a collar ll, which lits within an annular groove in the sleeve F. By moving said hand-lever the sleeve may be moved endwise upon the shaft, so as to carry the depending arm F of said sleeve into the groove c of the arm C2 or to free said arm F from said groove. Vhen the arm F is engaged with the arm C2, said arm F will partake of the oscillatory movement of the rockshaft. XVhen, on the contrary, the sleeve F moved so as to free the arm F from the said arm C2 of the shaft, said latter arm will continue to vibrate without giving any motion to the arm F' and connected parts.
It will of course be understood that interiitting recesses and projections of any shape upon the arms C2 and F may be substituted for the particular construction shown (embracing the groove e and the edge of the arm F fitting therein) with the same result.
G indicates a spring-detent mounted upon the hand-lever G and adapted to engage a notched segment A2 upon the bracket A.
I is a bcll-crank lever mounted upon a vertical pivot t' and arranged in approximately the same horizontal plane as the lower end of the arm F. The said pivot/L' is herein shown as mounted in a depending bracket A3, attached to the frame A. Said bell-crank lever I is provided with an. arm I', arranged transversely with reference to the shaft C and the axle of the machine, and extending forward with its free end suitably located to be eonneeted with the cutter-bar of the machine, said cutter-bar being indicated by dotted lines at K, Fig. l. Said bell-crank lever is also provided with a shorter arm I2, arranged approximately at right angles with the arm I', and connected at its free end by means of a connecting-bar L with the lower end of the arm F ofthe sleeve F. From this construction it is entirely obvious that when the said arm F is oscillated a corresponding oscillatory movement will be transmitted through the medium oi' the bell-crank lever I 11o the l cutter-bar K. 2
In Fig. 5 I have shown. a modification of the scalloped driving-cam E and rocking lever C', wherein the cam is located upon the drivewheel B inside of the rocking lever or between the saine and the wheel-hub. The calmface is in this instance formed `upon the exterior of the cani-ring; but the latter is scalloped andl toothed in the same manner as before described, and operates in the same manner to give a rocking movement to the rock-shaft C.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with the :frame and cutter-bar of a mower, of a drive-wheel provided with an annular scalloped toothed cam and a swinging lever provided with two toothed wheels or pinions upon its ends intcrmeshin g with said toothed cam, substantially as described.
2. The eombin ation, with the lframe and eutter-bar of a mower, of a drive-wheel provided with a scalloped and toothed cam, a rockshaft mounted on said frame and provided with a rocking lever, toothed pinions upon the ends of said lever engaging said cam, a longitudinally-groovcd arm rigidly attached to said rock-shaft, a loose sleeve upon said rock-shaft provided with an arm adapted to engage the groove of the arm upon said rockshaft, a hand-lever for moving said sleeve endwise upon the shaft, and a bell-crank lever, one arm of which is connected with the cutter-bar and the other with the arm upon the sleeve, substantially as described.
