GUIDE-BAR FOR LlNING UP THE CURVES 0F STREET-SURFACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,491, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed March 5, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. MACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide-Bars for Lining Up the Curves of Street-Surfaces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for lining up and regulating the arch or curve of the. bed of a street, and has for its object the provision of curved liners or gages which are used in pairs, each extending from the curb to the center of thestreet, where they meet and are suitably jointed. As many of these pairs as are desired may be arranged at suitable distances apart along the street extending from curb to curb, and gravel, sand, or other filling material is then thrown until it is as high as the top of the arched liners or gages, and then a straight-edge is run transversely across the street from curb to curb, and the bed will be found to be accurately and evenly arched. These liners or gages are preferably made T shape in cross-section,with the stem of theT projecting down ward, which gives them strength and allows the stem to be sunk into the bed of the street. These devices may be used to get the curve of alleys and narrow streets in which the center is the lowest by simply turning them upside down or reversing the curves.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a roadbed, showing the devices in place. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the liners or gages. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a road-bed.

If it is desired to line an alley or small street with the center depressed, it is only necessary to turn the liners or gages over.
The liners or gages are preferably made of metal. They may be made in one piece instead of two, as shown.
After the bed is rounded up the liners or theyhave made are filled up.
Having thus described my invention, what I 1. 2. A removable arched liner or gage for regulating the curve or arch of a road-bed, consisting of a curved metallic piece T- shaped in cross-section, the head of the T resting upon and its top face being level with the upper surface of the filling, as set forth.
3. The combination of a pair of removable arched liners or gages extending from curb to curb and meeting in the center of the roadbed and having an offset-joint, as set forth.
