To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM S. BOURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus for Raising or Lowering WVagon-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in hoisting apparatus for raising or lowering a wagon-body from and on the running-gear; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple apparatus by means of which a wagon-bed may be very readilyhoisted from or lowered onto the running-gear.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of an apparatus embodying my improvements, showing the same-in position with the wagon-bed hoisted from the running-gear. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, showing the wagonbed lowered on a supporting-frame, the running gear having been removed.

A represents a pair of sills arranged at a suitable distance apart, connected by a bar B,

attached to them near one end, and also connected together by a pair of guide-bars O, which connect their opposite ends. The said sills have notches or recesses D in their upper sides between the ends of the guide-bars, and arranged transversely under the latter at a suitable point is a pair of stop-cleats E, which are adapted to retain the running-gear of a wagon in the required position by engaging one of the hind wheels thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. Rising from the sills is a pair of vertical standards F.

G represents a hoisting-frame, which comprises a pair of side. arms H, fulcrumed between the upper ends of the standards, a beam I, which connects the inner or shorter ends of the said arms, and a bar K, which connects the outer ends thereof. Suspended from the beam I near its ends is a pair of bails L, which are attached thereto by means of rings M, and to the lower ends of the arms of the bails are pivotally attached right-angular frames N by means of eyebolts O. The said frames are of a rope the frames will be swung inward toward each other, and by lengthening it the said frames will be swung apart, and thereby they are adapted to engage wagon-beds of various lengths.

A Windlass-shaft T is j ournaled in bearings U, secured on the standards, and is provided with a crank V and with a ratchet-wheel X. A pawl Y is pivoted to one of the standards, is adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel, and maybe swung upward out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel and rested against a pin or stud Z, that projects from the standard, and thereby maintained out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel. Ropes A are attached to the Windlass-shaft and to the-bar K, and hence by turning the Windlass-shaft said ropes may be coiled or unooiled thereon to cause the frame to raise or lower the wagon-bed, as will be readily understood. By engaging the pawl with the ratchet the wagon-bed may be held suspended at any desired elevation.

B represents a supporting-frame, which comprises a pair of cross-beams O, hinged at their inner ends to the innermost guide-bar O and connected together near their outer ends by a bar D. From the outer ends of said cross-bars depend a pair of supporting-standards E, which serve to maintain the supporting-frame in a horizontal position when the same is swung downward onto the ground, and when thus arranged the said .frame is adapted to support the wagon-bed when the latter is lowered thereon. A rod F is offset and attached to and serves to connect the standards, and when the supporting-frame is raised to the position indicated in Fig. 1 it rests against and is maintained in position by the said offset rod.

I do not desire to limit myself to the pro cise arrangement of devices hereinbefore shown and described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The hoisting apparatus comprising the sills, the parallel guide-bars connecting the same, the cleats or stops E, arranged transversely under said guide-bars, the standards rising from the sills, the Windlass-shaft j ournaled in bearings on the standards, said shaft having the crank and the ratchet-wheel, the pawl to engage the latter, the hoisting-frame pivoted between the standards, theropes connecting one end of the hoisting-frame to the windlass, and the frames suspended from the inner side of the hoisting-frame and adapted to engage the wagonbed, substantially as described,
