N-PETER3, PHOTD-L THOGRAPHER. WASHINGTONv D. C.
Darren WILLIAM RAYNOR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CANCELING POSTAGE-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 40,430, dated October 27, 1863; antedated October 14, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLAM RAYNOR, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and improved device for canceling postage, internal revenue, and other stamps, when used on letters, bank-checks, promissory notes, and all other articles or instruments on which stamps may be used; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention partly in section; Fig. 2, a detached face View of the lower male die; Fig. 3, a detached face view of the upper female die; Fig. 4, a perspective view of Fig. 2 with types inserted in it; Fig. 5, a perspective view of Fig. 3 with an elastic pad inserted in it; Fig. 6, detached views of the types shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 7, a detached perspective View of a calendar pertaining to the invention; Fig. 8, detached perspective view of two endless bands pertaining to the calendar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this .invention is to obtain a simple and efficient implement or device by which postage and other stamps may be canceled in a more expeditious manner than by the ordinary process of writing upon them.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or use of a male and female die, movable or adjustable types, an elastic pad, a calendar and punches, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a frame which may be of cast metal and of any suitable form. In the lower part or base of this frame there is a circular recess in which a male die, B, is fitted, having the name which is to be embossed on the stamp out on it in relief. This die B has an opening, a, at its center, in which types b are fitted, said types being for the purpose of impressing the date on the stamp when the latter is canceled. These types 12 bear on a spiral spring, a, which is, fitted'vertically in the base of the frame A, and the types are secured in proper position by means of a screw, 0, which passes horizontally into the front end of the base of the frame A and into the die B,-as shown in Fig. 1. The faces of the types b are on a level with the faces of the letters on the die B. When the date requires to be changed, the operator simply unscrews the screw 0, so that the inner end of the latter will be free from the types b, and the spring 0 will immediately throw the former out from the openinga, so that the proper types for the new date may be inserted in it.
In the upper part of the frame A there is placed a rod, D, which has a spring, E, con nected to it and an eccentric or cam, F, directly above it. The spring E has a tendency to keep the rod D elevated, and the rod D is forced down, when desired, by actuating the cam F, the latter having a lever, G, attached to it for that purpose.
To the lower end of the rod D the female die H is attached. This die has sunken letters formed in it corresponding to the raised letters on the male die B. (See Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4..) In the center of the female die H there is inserted a pad, I, which may be of indiarubber or any suitable elastic material. This pad is directly over the types bin the male die B, and to the female die H there are attached two vertical punches, d cl, which are directly Over and in line with holes 6 e in the male die B.
From this description it will be seen that by placing the stamp on the male die B, and then forcing down the female die H the stamp will be embossed with the proper name and date and will be also punched. The elastic pad I serves as a bearing for the types I), and is designed as a substitute for female types,
which cannot be made adjustable like the Withinthe grooves ff of the band J there are fitted bands K K, which may be of paper or any thin pliable material. These bands are attached at their upper edges to toothed rims h h, into which spring-pawls engage, said pawls being attached to small rods or shafts i,
which pass through openings jj in the band J. On the upper band, K, the months of the year are printed or marked, and the days of the months are printed on the lower band, K. The openings Z Z in the band J are of such dimensions as to expose one month and one number of the bands K K, and by turning these bands, which is done by means of the spring pawls i, any date may be exposed. Whenever new type for a date is adjusted in the die B, the bands K K are turned to expose the same date at the front of the machine, and by this means the embossing of wrong dates on the stamps is avoided, as the date in the die 13 will be fully exposed at the front of the gether as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
