SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,261, dated May 28, 1889.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Delle, in the county of Spink and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to certain in provements in harvesters, and pertains more especially, first, to the combination of the usual short elevator used on harvesters and binders with the secondary discharge-elevator adapted to deliver the cut grain into the wagon-box or other receptacle without binding.
The second part of my invention consists in the flexible pocket or flap adapted to be optionally drawn under the discharge end of the secondary elevator and to retain the discharge therefrom and to be emptied of its contents with such frequency as may be desired by the driver of the machine.
Referring to the first part of my invention, I would say that it is intended to meet a heretofore experienced necessity not provided for in any of the existing machinery. y
As my invention is adapted to be attached to any well-known harvester, I do not deem it necessary t0 show or describe the latter any further than to make the description of my invention and its operation intelligible.
In the drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of a portion of a harvester and the attachment thereto of my invention, the flap being in its discharging position. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the head of the discharge-elevator, exhibiting the iiap in position to receive and retain the grain.
A is a portion of the harvester provided with the usual cutting mechanism, behind and parallel with which is the usual form of platform, B, with its endless conveyer, designed to carry the grain as it is cut to that side of the machine opposite to the standing grain.
C indicates the usual elevator with its endless carrier, the lower end of which is seated at the discharge end of the platform I3 and adapted to receive the grain therefrom, and is operated in any suitable manner from the adjacent roller of the latter platform.
D is the secondary elevator intended to receive the contents of the elevator C and discharge the same into the box of an accompanying Wagon or other receptacle. The apron D of elevatorD is carried in the usual way upon end rollers, and is driven by either a gear belt or chain. The connection of the lower end of the elevator D with the upper end of the elevator C is of any well-known flexible nature in order to provide for the necessary variance of the altitude of the discharge end of the elevator D. The particular construction of this flexible connection is a well-known expedient, and is not specifically referred to, but is fully shown in the drawings. The latter elevator is supported at any desired elevation by abail, G, attached to the upper portion thereof, and a rope, II, adj ustably connecting said b ail to any suitable part of the machine, or in any other obvious mode.
The primary elevator O is made comparatively short, and is given an abrupt elevation. This is greatly advantageous from the fact that the difficulty of elevating the grain where it is exposed to the action of the wind is greater at the latter portion of the process of elevation, and this difficulty is lessened by using the secondary elevator at as'near a hori- Zontal position as possible. Both elevators O and D are provided with the usual transverse slats, J, to assist in retaining the grain thereon.
Referring to the second part of my invention, K K `are arms pivotally attached, respectively, at their inner ends to the outside elevator, D, near the upper or outer endof the latter, and thereby adapted to be oscillated as desired in the line of said elevator. The arms K are projected upward and outward from the discharge end of elevator D, and are connected at their outer ends by a transverse rod, L. On the rod L is suitably fastened a canvas or other flexible iiap, IWI, the width of the discharge end of elevator D, and extending downward a sufficient distance to be IOO drawn baclnvard under said discharge end and `furnish a pocket for the intermittent reception oli' the cnt grain i'rom said elevator. To the outer ends, respectively, of the rod N are attached ropes or straps O (i), which are passed upward and inward through suitable guideeyes, l), placed externally on the elevator l) within convenient grasp ot thedriver oil.' the machine. lVhen the driver draws inward on the ropes O,the lower end ot' the llap M is held under the discharge end oi' the elevator l) a short distance within the line thereof. The llap M is then in position to retain the discharge from elevator D, and when a sutlieient accumuh'ttion has been had therein the driver by releasing the ropes O allows said llap to instantly swing outwardly from the weight of the retained grain and permits the latter to be discharged in a bunch upon the stubble. rlhen by immediately7 drawing inwardly on the ropes O the flap lll is again drawn into and held in position to retain the next gavel.

My invention can be readily attached to any ordinary harvester. lWith the same, and by the employment of two men and a b 2 y,lhave eut and stacked lil'teen acres per day. NV hen the grain is very ripe, the portion that is usually thrashed out in cutting and handling is deposited in the wagon-box and saved. lV hat l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

2. ln combination with the discharge-elevator l), the arms K K, pivoted thereon at their inner ends, the rod L, connecting said arms at their outer ends, the rod N, the flap M, extending between rods L and N, and the ropes O, attached,respectively, to the ends ot rod N and brought within convenient reach of the driver ot the machine, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
