Description

' faculty to withstand oxidation, and my alloy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BAUR, on
NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED ALLOY OF COPPER, ZINC, AND ALUMINUM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.40,388, dated October 27, 1863; antcdated October 20, 1863.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS BAUR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Composition; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
, The invention consists in an alloy made of copper, zinc, and aluminum mixed together in about the following proportions: copper, fourteen to sixteen parts zinc, ten parts; aluminum one-tenth to three parts. The aluminum imparts to the alloy a great hardness and toughness, making it superior in that-respect to all other alloys heretofore made of copper, zinc, and other metals-such as the well-known I Aich metal and rendering it particularly fit for cannon and other articles which are exposed to a great strain. Furthermore, a slight trace of aluminum imparts to the alloy the will therefore be of great value for covering ships bottoms, and for all articles which are exposed to the influence of the atmospheric air and of moisture. The aluminum also im parts to the alloy great ductility and mallea bility; and it is of particular value that my alloy can be heated and forged, like copper, whereas ordinary brass is Very brittle when heated to a red heat. It must be remarked that a very small percentage of aluminum is required to produce these results, and the high price of said metal has therefore no material effect on the price of my alloy, which is lower than that of ordinary brass, (containing seventy per cent. copper to thirty per cent. zinc,) and much lower than that of copper. Finally, I want it understood that the zinc can be replaced in my alloy by tin without materially altering the result.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Thewithin-described composition or alloy, produced by mixing together the ingredients herein specified, substantially as and in about the proportion herein set forth.
' JULIUS BAUR.
